WITWESSES NITED STATES PATENT intron JOHNSTON STUART, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,929, dated March 19, 1895.
Application filed October 13, 1894. Serial No. 525,776. (No model.)
To all whom t mayconcern:
Be it known that I, JOHNSTON STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manhole-Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in man-hole covers, and consists in a certain construction and arrange ment of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a man-hole cover for closing the opening into a subway or underground gallery, in which Water and gas mains or electric wires are conducted, said cover having means for locking it securely to its seat and being so constructed as to afford a perfect ventilation for said subway and at the same time preventing water and dirt from falling therein. This object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my irnproved cover and its seating ring or casing, a portion of both being broken away to more clearly show the arrangement of parts. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in perspective of a portion of the ring or seat, showing the way therein which receives the locking lug of the cover to retain said cover in place.
Referring to the letters of reference, A designates the ring or annular casing which is set in the outer opening or man-hole leading from the sub-way, the top of said casing terminating flush with the surface of the street.
B designates the cover which consists of a circular disk having a series of concentric grooves in its upper face and a series of apertures a, passing therethrough, which afford ventilation for said sub-way. This cover is adapted to tightly iill the opening through the casing A, its beveled edge resting against the inclined face c of said casing and its under edge lying upon the annular shoulder b thereof.
Arranged diametrically opposite and depending from the under face of the cover near its margin, are the depending integral lugs C having the outwardly extending right angle end portion c. der b of the casing on opposite sides thereof is an inclined slot or opening f which cornmunicates with an undulative or zigzag way h formed in the inner wall of said casing and extending horizontally.
The openings f receive the projecting ends ofthe lugs O permitting the cover to settle to its seat and guiding said lugs into the Way 7L, when by slightly rotating the cover the lugs will be carried over the undulations in the way to the end thereof, whereby the cover is securely locked toits seat, preventing it from being blown off by an explosion of gas, or accidentally removed, for in order to disengage the lugs from said way, the cover must be rotated and its weight raised at each undulation to enable the lugs to pass over the elevations thereof.
D designates a concavo-convex cup or basin which is secured to the under side of the cover by means of the bolt F passing through said cover and cup and receiving the nut d whereby said cup is held securely in place, said cup being provided on its edge with the feet or studs z' that bear against the under face of the cover and afford an open space between said cover and cup for the passage of air, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This cup is so located below the openings ain the cover as to receive and retain all water and dirt falling therethrough, but permitting the free passage of gas or foul air from the sub-way around the cup and through the said openings. To provide for removing the water from said cup, a pipe H is passed through the cover which extends to the bottom of the ,cup and which is provided at its upper end with a screw plug m. By removing said plug a pump may be screwed into said pipe and the water withdrawn. In case a well should be employed in connection with the sub-Way, l the pipe would extend from said cup to the well and the pump connected with said pipe, the dirt being retained in saidcup.
Extending through the shoul-v It Will be seen, that, by means of the boltV F, the cup is detachably secured to the cover, so that in case said cup should become filled and clogged, it may be readily removed and cleaned.
By means of this improved device, it Will be seen, that perfect ventilation is afforded for the sub-Way and all water and dirt is prevented from falling therein, keeping said way clean and dry, and also attording a secure lock to retain the cover in place.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a man-hole cover, the combination of the seating ring, the cover having apertures therethrough, the cup located below said cover and embracing said apertures, said cup having the feet Which extend from its rim and bear against the under face of said cover, and the bolt passing centrally through said cover and cup to retain the cup in place.
2. In a man-hole cover, the combination of the seatin g ring-, the cover having apertures therethrough, the cup secured to the under side of said cover adjacent thereto and so as to embrace said apertures therein, and the pipe extending through said cover to the bottom ot said cup.
3. In a man-hole cover, the combination of the annular casing having the engaging recesses in the opposite sides thereof, the perforated cover fitting into said casing and having the rightangle lugs depending from its under face and engaging in said recesses, the cup below said cover having the projecting feet which bear against the under face thereof and means for locking said cup to said cover.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHNSTON STUART.
