HARRY TAYLOR, OF BLOXWIGH, ENGLAND.
STIRRUP.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 535,870, dated March 19, 1 895. Application filed September 18,1894. Serial No. 523,394- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY TAYLOR, stirrupfiler, a subject of the Queen of England, residing at Bloxwich, in the county of Stafford,in the Kingdom of England, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Stirrups, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My inventionrelates to improvements in safety stirrups in which a hinged foot-plate attached at one end to a pivoted inner bow, is detachably secured at the opposite end to the stirrup leg; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide means for effectually securing the foot-plate against normal or vertical pressure of the riders foot; and second, to render the foot-plate readily detachable at one end when the pressure of the foot is changed to an oblique or angular direction through the rider being thrown or unseated. I attain these objects by the arrangement illustrated on the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front View or elevation of a safety stirrup constructed according to my invention, with inner bow and foot-plate in the closed position, Fig. 2 being a perspective view of the same but showing the inner bow partly turned and the foot-plate released.
Similarletters refer to similarpartsthroughout both the views.
A represents the legs of the stirrup; B, the inner bow; C, the foot-plate; D, a projecting tongue on foot-plate; E, a fork on end of inner bow; F,'a key or lug on outer leg; G, a slot in tongue and fork; H, a stop on key; I, the hinge of foot-plate, and K K are the pivots upon which the inner bow revolves.
As will be seen from the accompanying drawings my improved safety stirrup consists of an outer bow A and an inner bow B the latter being capable of revolving in one or both directions as desired, upon pivots K arranged within the legs of the outer bow A. The foot-plate O is hinged at I to the lower end of one side of thisinner bow. Upon the other or free end of the plate 0 is a tongue D arranged to engage within a fork E formed upon the corresponding end of the inner bow. Upon the inner face of the corresponding leg of the outer bow or stirrup A I form or attach a projecting lug or key E, which, when the stirrup or inner bow B is turned to the position shown in Fig. 1, enters a slot G extending across the outer face of the fork E on the inner bow, and the tongue D upon the footplate 0 and thus firmly secures itin position.
If desired I may form upon the back end of this projecting lug orkey F a stop H for the purpose of restricting the rotation of the inner bow to one direction only. I
In its normal or closed position the foot plate 0 of my improved stirrup is secured at one end to the inner bow B by the hinge I at the lower end of the inner leg of the bow B, and atthe other end it is detachably secured by the introduction of the tongue 1) Within the fork E of the inner bow B, and by the engagement of the projectinglug or key F provided upon the inner face of the outer legof the stirrup in the slot G formed across the outer side of the fork E and end of the tongue D. The lug or key F thus supports the de= tachable end of the plate in its normal position against the downward pressure of the foot as shown on Fig. 1, but should the rider be thrown the pressure of the foot, acting obliquely, will cause the inner bow B to turn upon its pivots K to an angle which will bring the slot G and projecting lug F out of engagement, whereupon the detachable end of the foot-plate C will fall free as shown on Fig. 2, thus releasing the foot of the rider.
I am aware of Patent No. 341,987, dated May 18, 1886, and do not claim what is therein shown and described. My invention is an improvement upon the construction shown in said patent which is well known to me. My
aim has been to produce a stronger and better construction, which I believe is embodied in the form herein shown and described.
What I claim is- A safety stirrup having an outer bow and an inner bow pivoted therein, and a foot plate 9 5 hinged at one end to the inner bow and formed or provided at its other end With a projecting In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand notched tongue D, a fork on the correspondin presence of two witnesses.
ing end of the inner bow between the arms HARRY TAYLOR. of which the tongue fits, said fork also notched Witnesses:
so that the notch of the tongue D registers GEORGE F. PARKER,
therewith and a. key F on the inner side of U. S. Consulate, Birmingham, England. the outer. bow adapted to engage all three ORLANDO E. POWER,
notches when the bow and foot plate are Boscobel, Wooclfielcl Road, Kings Heath; brought into operative position. Birmingham, England.
