BEDSTEAD-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,854, dated March 19, 1895.

. To all whom, it may concern;-
Be it known that I, WALTER Scorn: PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bailey, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Braces; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bedstead-braces, the invention having for its object, among others, the provision of a simple and inexpensive and at the same time effective brace, which may be readily used in connection with any bedstead.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a brace which will serve to draw the posts or corners of the bedstead in the direction of the center, and at the same time effectually prevent the bulging of the side rails of the bedstead.
A further and more immediate object of the invention resides in the means employed whereby the parts of .the bedstead while securely braced, are at the same time permitted to yield within certain limits, thus providing against injury to the bedstead which would otherwise be likely to be produced by changes in the weather which result in shrinkage or expansion of the parts.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in thenovel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is aplan view of my improved bedstead-brace applied in operative position to a bedstead. Fig. 2, is a detail view upon an enlarged scale of the clamping screw and its connections.
Reference now beinghad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a bedstead of ordinary and well known construction, having head-rails B, B, side-rails O, G and corner posts D. Into the inner angles of the posts are screwed the hook-eyes E, E, and at the longitudinal centers of the side rails similar hook eyes are provided upon the inner faces of the slats. To each of the corner posts are secured by means of the securing device E, the ends of wires F, there being two wires, each wire extending diagonally across the bedstead and after being passedover the hook-eye at the longitudinal center of the rail upon the opposite side of the bedstead, the wire iscontinued to the post upon the same side of the bedstead as the first named post, and there secured. It will thus be seen that the wires will so cross as to provide a rectangular or diamond shaped space having two of its angles at the longitudinal centers of the side rails and the opposite angles upon a line drawn through the longitudinal center of the bedstead.
The wire tightening device G, consists of the two metallic strips H, H, one of which is provided with a screw threaded opening at its longitudinal center, through which is passed the screw threaded shank of the screw I, having at one of its ends a suitable operating handle I. The opposite end of the screw bears against the opposite plate or strip H.
K, K are rods having their inner ends attached to the plate H through which the screw passes, the said rods being passed loosely through openings la, in the other plate H, and the free endsof the rods being provided with'hooks 10 which hooks are designed to engage the wires F, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
L, L are hooked rods which are in every respect similar to the rods K, excepting that the said rods L are passed loosely through openings in the outer ends of both plates H and H, and the hooks upon the rods L extend in the opposite direction to the hooks upon the rods K. The inner ends of the rods L are provided with heads Z, and sleeved upon the said rods intermediate of the said heads and the face of the plate H are spiral springs m.
In use, the hooks upon the rods K and L are engaged with the wires, as shown in Fig.-
1 of the drawings. It will be seen that by turning the screw the wires will be drawn taut, the strainbeing inward from the corners and sides of the bedstead, and against the tension of the coiled springs.
It will be seen that by this construction provision is had for securely bracing the bedstead, and by reason of the spiral springs expansion or contraction due to changes in the atmospheric conditions is compensated for, thus avoiding possible damage being done to the bedstead, as would be likely to ensue were the springs omitted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bedstead tightener consisting of the two Wires F, each having its ends secured to corner posts on the same side of the bedstead, and the middle of each wire held to the longitudinal center of the side rail C on the opposite side from that to which its ends are secured, combined with the plates H and H, and the spring actuated rods L passing through perforations in said plates, the rods K seated in one plate H and passing through perforations it in a second plate H said rods connected to the wires F, and an independently turning screw I swiveled to one plate H and having screw threaded connection with the second plate H, all substantially as shown and described.
