ment of Staircases for Dwellings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to provide an arrangement of a stair case for dwelling purposes, which has a separate front and rear entrance, each accessible to any portion of the first floor independent of the other, and adjacent to an independent and separate side entrance, whereby the house can be adapted for one or two families, each having a separate entrance, yet providing but asingle main stairway in the dwelling, which naturally lessens the cost of construction.

With these ends in view I have devised the simple and novel arrangement of stair'case, which I will now describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and upon which like numerals denote corresponding parts in the several figures, and of which" Figure 1, shows a first floor plan of a house illustrating my invention. Fig. 2, is a plan of the second floor of the same dwelling, and

shows the top landing of the stairs. Fig. 3

is a side elevation of the dwelling showing a side entrance for the stairs, and an entrance to the cellar. Fig. 4, is a collar plan, and shows the cellar stairs and the entrance thereto from the exterior. Fig. 5, is a first floor plan View partly broken away, and shows a slightly modified construction, differing from Fig. 1, in that I have shown a passage way beside the stair-case.

Referring to the numerals of reference upon the drawings, 1 denotes the main hall; 2, the rear hall; 3, the front entrance; 4, the side entrance. I From the front hall it will be seen that access can be had to the parlor, library, or any of the rear apartments; also to any of the upper apartments, from the front, or rear hall, by use of the stair-case, of which 5 denotes the main stair-way; 6, a platform thereof; 7, the front treads to the platform, and 8 the rear treads leading to the platform. It will be seen that the rear entrance to the stair-case is not noticeable to the eye from the front hall, as it is to one side of the main run 5, and does not present any objectionable results in practice.

In Fig. 5 it will be seen that I have left a passage way upon one side of the stair-case, which obviates the necessity of having to pass through the library, or over the platform of the stair-way in order to get to the rear apartments of the dwelling. In some instances this may be desirable, while in others the form shown in Fig. 1, would be more satisfactory. I do not wish to confine myself to either construction, as they both are within the scope of my invention.

The rear entrance to the stairs, I have shown as from the rear hall, which is conveniently located to all the rear apartments, and also to the cellar, the entrance of which is immediately beneath the stairs 5, and which I indicate by 9. The side doorat of the house also opens into the rear hall 2, andis particularly desirable when the dwelling is used for two families, in which case one family would use the front door, and the front combination of stairs; including the treads 7, plat form 6, and the run 5; and the other family would use the side door, and the rear combi nation of stairs, consisting of the treads 8, platform 6, and the run 5.

The collar stairs may be constructed as shown in Fig. 4 having two runs of steps 10,

and a landing 11 which would be on .a level with the surface of the ground upon the outside, as shown in Figsp3 and 5. I place a door 12 in the side of the building at this point, through which access may be had to the said landing of the cellar stairs from the exterior, independent of the first floor plan, and serves in the place of the ordinary bulkhead entrance.

It is obvious of course that I may construct thehouse and stair-case without the outside entrance 12 to the cellar. The same is also true with regard to the side door 4 which opens into the rear hall. These are not necessarily essential features of the invention, but in many cases are desirable, and add very little to the expense of the dwelling.

It will be seen that my combination of stairs may readily be adapted to houses of the class illustrated, but whose interior arrangement may be different. For instance, I

may dispense with the rear hall, and have my door to the cellar, and door to the rear entrance 8 of the stair-case direct from the kitchen, or I may arrange it in combination with the apartments as shown in Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a dwelling of the class described the combination with front and rear halls each having separate entrances from the exterior, of astaircase consistingof a main run lengthwise with the building, a single landing near the bottom of said run whose width is greater than that of the main stair way, a front entrance to said landing in direct line with the main stair way and landing, a rear entrance to said landing beside the main run and having a direct opposite approach than that of the main entrance; substantially as shown.

2. In a dwelling of the class described the combination with front and rear halls each having separate entrances from the exterior, of astair case consisting of amain run length wise with the building, a single landing near the bottom of said run whose width is greater than that of the main stair way, a front entrance to said landing in direct line with the main stair way and landing, a rear entrance to said landing beside the main run and having a direct opposite approach than that of the main entrance,a cellar stair waybeneath said main-run and having a landing midway thereof, and an outside entrance to said cellar stair, substantially as described.
