STOCKING-SUPPORTING CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,609, dated March 12, 1895. Application filed August 10,1894. Serial No. 519,932. (NomodeL) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBEN D. BANOROFT, of
Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Stocking-Supporting Clasps, of which the following description, in connection with the ac companying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
The clasp herein to be described is adapted to engage stockings and garments and hold the same under strain.
My improved clasp is composed essentially of a loop having a converging stud-receiving slot, and a headed stud the shank of which is Wedge shaped in cross-section, said shank being adapted to be placed in said slot with the fabric at each side of it and over the head of the stud.
Figure 1 shows one of my improved clasps applied to a stocking. Fig. 2, on a larger scale, shows a clasp and the upper end of a stocking; Fig. 3, asection on the line 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 4: shows the loop in plan with the shank of the stud in section with fabric at each side. Fig. 5 shows the loop alone, and Fig. 6, a central longitudinal section of the loop Fig. 5.
My improved clasp is composed of a metallic loop a, having a contracted ordiverging slot or opening a, the slot being narrower toward its lower end, the upper end of the loop having a suitable eye aiby which to join the loop to a bight b of web, the end of the web having suitably attached to it a stud c, havin g a tapering orwedge-shaped shank crowned bya head 0 The upper end of the converging opening is sufficiently large to fit down over the head of the said stud after the fabric to be held has been laid on or over it, the fabric to be held lying at each side the shank of said stud and between it and the inner walls of the converging slot, as best represented in Fig. 4. To prevent accidental slipping of the stud up in the said slot I prefer to provide the loop with humps 5.
Figs. 1 and 2 show' the clasp applied to holding a stocking s, and the harder the downstrain on the stocking the farther the wedgeshaped shank of the stud is drawn into the narrower end of the slot a.
So long as the shank does not bottom in the slot, the harder the strain the stronger the pinch on the fabric between the stud and the edge of the slot.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A supporting clasp composed of a loop having a slot provided with converging sides, and a headed stud having a Wedge shaped shank of greater width at its narrowest point than the point of the slot and thereby prevented from bottoming in said slot and consequently serving to increase its hold upon the supported fabric, substantially as described.
2. A supporting clasp composed of a loop having a slot provided with converging sides, and a headed stud having a wedge shaped shank of greater width at its narrowest point than the point of the slot and thereby prevented from bottoming in said slot and consequently serving to increase its hold upon the supported fabric, the adjacent surfaces of the wedge shaped shank and the slot being fiat and parallel to increase the surface engagement with the supported fabric, substantially as described.
3. A supporting clasp composed of a loop having a slotprovided with converging sides, and a headed stud having a wedge shaped shank of greater width at its narrowest point than the point of the slot and thereby pre vented from bottoming in said slot and conseq uently serving to increase its hold upon the supported fabric, and the transverse humps 5, substantially as described.
