To all whom zit may concern: Be it known that I, RICHARD G. I-IEBDEN', citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to dust-pans.

The object of the invention is to provide a dust-pan which may be used by a person in a standing position; furthermore, the object is to provide a dust-pan which may be used either in a standing or in a stooped position, and again the object is to produce a dustpan so constructed that it may be pressed upon the floor firmly while the dust is being swept upon it; and finally the object is to produce a dust-pan which may be adjusted speedily and with slight manipulation either to a position adapted for use bya person in an erect position or by one in a stooped position.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a dust-pan as constructed now by me. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the dust-pan showing two positions of the handle and showing, also, the pan in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the Working parts.

In the drawings A represents the dust-pan of ordinary form, having a plate B secured to the bottom and to the back thereof as shown. In Fig. 2 this plate B has a rearwardly projecting foot O designed to rest upon the floor to form a pressure piece for the foot whereby the pan is held firmly and closely to the floor. Secured to or forming part of the said plate B is a vertical plate D having a lower depending point D forming an indentation or depression D .v To the plate D is pivotally secured a plate E having a hook F at its lower extremity to engage the projection D and depression D of the plate D. The said plate E is provided with a slot G wherein a spiral spring II is retained which bears at its upper I end against the upper portion of the said slot and bears at its lower end upon a pivot I forming part of or secured to the plate D and which passes through the slot G and which by the aid of a washer J serves to keep the operating parts in place.

In use, the pan is placed upon the floor and held firmly by the foot-piece C while both hands are engaged with the broom. When the person desires to use the pan in an upright position,it is only necessary to raise the handle, thus throwing the hook F of the plate E into engagement with the projection D of the plate D. When the said hook F strikes the curved projection D, the said hook is carried down until it passes the said projection and the spring II draws the hook up into the depression D hen it is desired to lower the handle for a stooping position it is only necessary to depress the handle so that the parts are disengaged.

I am aware that dust-pans have been invented and brought out to accomplish the object of this invention, but in so far as I have seen, none of them are of the construction herein described and shown and neither arethey as easily operated.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with adust-pan, of an angle-plate B secured to the inside of the pan and having a foot-piece O made therewith and projecting through the bottom of the pan substantially as set forth and for the purposes described, a vertical plate D formed with the said plate B, a depending projection D formed with said plate D forming a depression D a pivot I on said plate D, a slotted plate E mounted on the plate D and engaging the said pivot I and a hook F on the said plate E to engage the projection D and depression D and a spring II retained within said slotted plate E all working together substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth and described.
