Description

UNITED CHARLES A. SCOTT, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
IIVIPROVED BED-BOTTOM.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,492, dated March 27, 1866.
.To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. ScoTT, of Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and gures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature ot' my said invention consists in a novel mode of securing the elastic straps or springs for giving elasticity to the bed, to the ends of the slats forming the bottoni ot' the bed, and also in a novel mode of attaching said elastic straps to the frame ofthe bedstead in such a manner as to be readily removed or detached when desired.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand howto construct and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan or top View thereof; and Fig. 3 isa detached sectional View ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference in the different ligures denote the saine parts otl my invention.
A represents the frame of the bedstead, B B representing strips screwed or otherwise securely attached to said frame A at the head and foot of the bed. In said strips B there are cut or mortised triangular or Wedgeshaped mort-ises or sockets, into which the Wedge-shaped blocks C, attached to each end of the slats forming the hed-bottoni, enter, as shown, said sockets being cut at such distances apart as to correspond to the distance of the said slats from each other; or, if preferred, instead of the said sockets there' may be a wedge-shaped channel running the entire length of the strips B.
Through the upper part of each Wedgeshaped block C there is a hole into which opens a slot, as shown. The elastic straps D, connecting said blocks to the ends of the slats E, enter said slots, as shown, and are firmly secured by passing the pin c through the fold in the elastic and the aforesaid hole or enlargement in the slot, as shown. The other end of the elastic D is secured to the slats E in a similar manner by being inserted in the vertical slot in the block F, which is secured to the slats, as shown, and passing the pin a through the fold in the elastic and the hole or enlargement in said slot as before; or, if preferred, the block F may be left oft',
and the slot and hole may be made in the slat itselfl and the elastic inserted therein and secured as before.
It will be observed that the mode ot attaching the elastic to the blocks C and slats E, as herein shown, constitute a sort of thoroughbrace arrangement, which I consider superior to any other mode of attachment.
Having described my invention, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein described mode of securing the ends ot' the elastic straps in and to the said blocks and slats by means of the pins a c, as and for the purposes described.
CHARLES A. SCOTT.
