DEVICE FOR DRAWING ALE.
SPECTFICATION forming part of Letters 'Patent No. 534314, dated February 26, 1895. Application filed December 12, 1894:. Serial No. 531,557 (1 l'o model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. REERs, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Device for Drawing Alc, of which the 4 following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device for Conveniently and quickly drawing the desired amount of ale from a barrel, into a glass of other receptacle without causing the ale to foam at the delivery end.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described lereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation ot' the improvement as applied, with parts in section., Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the receptacle and parts connected therewith. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View of the same, on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. l is a similar `view of the same, on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. 4
The improved device for drawing ale is provided with a receptacle A, made of suitable size and material. In this receptacle Ais arranged a partition B forming the compartments A' and A of which the former serves to store the ale, and the one above it, A is adapted to receive the ale from the storage barrel or cask, as hereinafter more fully described. As shown in Fig. 2, I prefer to put in a second partition B' in the upper part of the receptacle A, to form a third oornpartment A for carrying off air and gases through an air and gas vent, as hereinafter more -fully explained.
Into the receptacle A and near to the bottom thereof, extends the pipe C, provided on the outside of the receptacle with a valve C' which is normally open. The pipe C is provided at its upper end with a draw faucet D located on the side of the bar E, so as to be within reach of the operator to draw ale into a glass or other receptacle whenever required.
Into the compartment A discharges a pipe F provided with a pressure regulating valve G, of any approved Construction, the said pipe F being preferably provided with two or more branch pipes F' and F each connected With a pipe I leading to and extending into the barrels, 'casks or other vessels containing the ale. Each of the pipes F' 'and F is provided with a suitable valve F or F which, when opened, con nects the corresponding pipe F' or F with the main supply pipe Iof a barrel containing a particular brand of ale. Each pipe I forms a suction pipe for an ale pump J of any approved construction and located at the bar E. This pump` J is only used in case the ale in the barrelis without pressure and must be pumped up; and in this case the corresponding valve F F is closed to disconnect the pipe F and receptacle A from the pipe I.
` Each of the partitions B and B' is provided at its edge with notches or openings 13 and B respectively, so that ale entering the compartment A for instance, by the pipe F is distributed over the partition B, to finally pass through the openings or notches B down the inner face of the receptacle A in the upper part of the compartment A' to fill the latter with the liquid. Now it will be seen that any foam contained or produced in the compartment A does not pass into the oompartment A', owing to the smallness of the notches in the partitions B and B' which fit directly against the inner wall of the compartment A. Foam which rises and fills the compartment A* can pass through the notches B into the compartment A and as the foam condenses there the liquid can flow through the notches B down the inner wall of the compartment A to fill the same, and finally pass through the notches into the compartment A'.
From the upper compartment A leads an air and gas vent pipe H, provided With a valve H', near the receptacle A, and normally open. The upper end of the pipe H, which. extends to the bar E is provided with a valve H normally closed but opened from time to time by the bar keeper, to let out air and gas accumulated in the receptacle A, and to permit the `ale to pass by its own pressure into the receptacle from the barrel by pipes I F and regulating device G. The receptacle A is preferably provided with a glass gage K, of anyapproved Construction, so that the amount of ale contained in the receptacle can be ascertained at any time.
IOO
The operation is as foilows: When it is desired to draw ale into a glass or other receptacle at the bar E, the operator opens the draw faucetD and the ale under its own pressure flows from the compartnent A' through the pipe C into a glass. The ale withdrawn from the receptacle, is replaced by ale from the pipe F and regulator G fiowing into the compartment A In doing so the ale produces foarn which, however, does not pass into the lower compartment A', as previously explained, but only the liquid, so that ale without foam is drawn from the bottom of the receptacle through the pipe C whenever the faucet D is opened. The foam in the compartments A and A condenses, as ale is not continuously drawn by the faucet and the liquid thus produced accumulates in the compartment A' as previously explained. The barkeeper, from time to tine, opens the valve H so as to let out the gases forned by the condensation of the ale or the evaporation thereof, and to permit the refilling of thereceptacle A should the latter run low by drawing large quantities.
It will be seen that by the arrangenent described, ale is drawn directly into the glass or other receptacle at the bar without causing any or much foam, so thatit requires but a short time to fill the glass. As is well known, ale as heretofore drawn from the storage cask, produces consderable foan at the delivery end of the ale pump, and the usual practice heretofore Was to draw an amount of ale into a supply vessei, from which to fill the glasses as called for.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device for drawing ale, comprising a receptacle having an inlet adapted for conv nection with the barrei, and provided with an outlet, and an essentially imperforate partition whose edge is secured to the wails of the receptacle between the inlet and outlet pipe, said partition being provided With notches near the walls of the vessel, substantially as described.
2. A device for drawing ale, comprising a receptacle provided with a marginally notched partition forming two compartnents, an inlet pipe discharging into the receptacle above the partition and essentiaily parallel thereto, to cause the ale to spread over the partition, and an outlet pipe connected to the lower compartment, substantially as described.
3. A device for drawing ale, comprising a receiving receptacle connected with the bar- I rel and draw faucet, a partition tting in the said receptacle between the inlet and outlet pipes, the said partiton being provided with notchos to cause the entering ale to flow through the notches onto the inner face of the receptacie below the partition, and a second notched partition above the inlet pipe to form a vent chanber in the said 'eceptacie, substantiaily as shown and described.
4. A device for drawing ale, comprising a receiving receptacle connected with the ale barrel or cask, a partition fitting in the said receptacle between the inlet and outlet pipes, the said partition being provided with notches to cause the entering ale .to flow through the notches onto the inner face of the receptacle below the partition, a second notched partition above the inlet pipe to form a vent chamber in the said receptacle, and a vent pipe leading from the said vent chamber and provided ;with a valve, snbstantiaily as shown and described.
