ELECTRIC SIGNALING APPARATUS.

latter class including such calls as wagon, 2o telephone, and the like, and the receiving apparatus at the central station comprising a register adapted to record the signals received in code characters on a strip, and a hell or other equivalent indicating device or 2 5 alarm mechanism, adapted to respond on the reception of the special calls, but to remain silent on the reception of the patrol or post signals. This patent besides generically claiming the above, also contains certain specific means by which the desired result is accomplished.
This invention has for its object to provide other novel means by which the results above specified can be carried out.
3 5 In accordance with this invention the bell or other alarm or indicating device which is to respond to certain signals and not to other signals, is an electrically controlled mechanically actuated device.
One part of this invention therefore consists in the combination with signal transmitters at the sub stations adapted to transmit two different classes of messages, over an I electric circuit, and a message receiving instrument at the main station responsive to the changes in said circuit, of a special indicating device also located at the main station, and provided with a movable member actuated by a toothed wheel, and an electromagnet to control the operative engagement 4 of the said movable member and toothed wheel, as will be described; also, in the combination with signal transmitters at sub stations adapted to transmit two different classes of messages over an electric circuit, and a 5 3 message receiving instrument at the main station controlled by said circuit, of a special indicating device at the main station, provided with a movable member, a toothed A wheel connected with and rotated by said receiving instrument to actuate said movable member of the indicating device, and an elec tro-magnet to control the operative engagement of said toothed wheel and movable memher, as will be described.
Other features of this invention will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1, represents in top or plan view partially broken away, a message receiving instrument, and a special indicating device, the mechanical actuator of which is operatively connected with a shaft of said instrument; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view of a modified form of special indicating device, and Fig. 4:, a diagram showing the essential circuits to illustrate my invention.
In connection with this invention any well known or suitable message receiving instru- 8o ment or register may be employed, and such register may be either a single or multiple pen register although the latter form is preferable; as the signals from several circuits may be received and recorded upon the same stripot' paper, and but one train employed. I have however in the present instance illustrated my invention in connection with a multiple pen receiver,'substantially like that shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 426,554, like letters representing likeparts, said instrument being arranged to receive the signals from four separate circuits, and comprising a normally wound train, for moving forward the strip of paper upon which the 5 message is recorded, an electro-magnet M,for releasing said train, fourpen magnets as e, and pens operated by them which press the paper against the marking wheels Whichare inked by suitable inking devices provided for [00 the purpose. The pen magnets are included in local circuits, controlled by the relays K,
which are included in the separate signaling circuits.
The signal boxes or sub stations, are arranged in or included in the several signaling circuits at desired points, they each containing multiple signal transmitters, adapted to transmit two different classes of signals or messages, viz:special signals which require immediate attention, and patrol signals which do not require immediate attention. Such signal boxes are herein represented at S, as included in the signaling circuits w, to, which circuits are normally closed, and hence the armatures of the relays in said circuits are normally attracted.
A creeper, such as shown in United States Patent No. 426,554, hereinbefore referred to, is provided, which operates on the occurrence of a change in the condition of the signaling circuit of long duration, the said creeper consisting of a sector m provided with a serrated edge loosely pivoted to an arm in fixed to the shaft 'n', and a toothed or serrated wheel m fixed to a shaft j upon the periphery of which wheel the sector bears, all as in said patent. When the parts are at rest, as shown in Fig. 4:, the sector m drops by gravity out of engagement with the wheel m but just as soon as the magnet M is energized, the said sector is thrown into engagement with the wheel m and by friction the said sector is raised or turned upwardly on its pivot. The arm carrying the sector being fixed to the shaft n will be vibrated in response to the impulses and hence will retain the sector in engagement with the wheel on much longer on impulses of long duration than otherwise. A pin projects from the sector, upon which rests the outer or free end of a contact pen m insulated from the contact pen m As the sector is lifted, the contact pen m is raised, and upon the occurrence of an impulse of long duration, said pin is raised sufficiently to make contact with the pen m and thereby close the local circuit t containing the local battery t and electro-magnet 2?.
The patrol signals are composed of a series of short breaks or changes in the condition of the circuit, and the special signals are composed of a long break followed by a series of short breaks, and on the reception of a patrol signal the armature of one of the relays vibrates, closing the local circuit containing one of the pen magnets e, and the releasing magnet M, thereby releasing the normally wound train and recording the signal or message upon the strip, and upon the reception of a special signal the same operation of the parts takes place, but in addition thereto the armature of the relay K is held retracted upon the occurrence of the long break, and the armature of the releasing magnet M correspondingly held attracted long enough for the creeper to operate and close the local circuit, and thereby attract the armature of the electro-magnet 25 I The special indicating instrument herein shown and which forms the subject matter of this invention, comprises a bell or gong R, supported on a suitable frame r, a striking lever 7", which constitutes the movable member of the device, and an actuator, by means of which movement is mechanicallyimparted to said striking lever. The striking lever r, pivoted at W, is made in two parts, that is, its rear end r which engages the actuator, is separated from, but jointed to the main lever, and said rear end piece or arm W, is connected with or supports the armature F, of the electro-magnet 25 The actuator as herein represented consists of a toothed wheel to, secured to one of the shafts or arbors of the normally wound train of the message recording apparatus, as the shaft 0 for instance, said shaft being suitably extended that the toothed wheel may be secured thereto in proper position with relation to the jointed or two part striking lever to be engaged by said lever, and during such engagement as the toothed wheel revolves the striking lever is actuated to strike the gong.
Upon the reception of a special signal, as the creeper responds to the prolonged change in the circuit, as before stated, the armature i is attracted, moving the jointed end piece or arm r into engagement with the revolving actuator u, but such engagement is effected only on the occurrence of such prolonged change in the condition of the circuit. A spring 0 is connected to the striking lever which acts thereon in opposition to the movement given to it by the actuator. Thus it will be seen that upon the reception of the special signals the bell will respond, but upon the reception of the patrol signals the bell will remain silent.
I do not however desire to limit my invention to the particular means herein shown for moving the striking lever r, or part thereof into and out of engagement with the toothed wheel or actuator, as it is obvious that in lieu of a prolonged change in the condition of the circuit, any other differentiating impulse may be employed to atfect the electro-magnet t, on the reception of the special signals and not on the reception of the patrol signals;
In Fig. 3, the toothed wheel or actuator is arranged to be moved longitudinally on the shaft 0 by means of the armature of the electro-magnet t and the striking lever is represented as composed of a single piece, or pieces rigidly connected together, and in this instance it will be seen that the same result is produced as above described, the actuator being moved into engagementwith the lever instead of the lever into engagement with the actuator.
I claim- 1. The combination with a message recording instrument located at a main station, one or more signal transmitters located at substations adapted to transmit two diiferent classes of messages, and an electric signaling IIO .TIS
circuit connecting the same, of a bell or other indicating device also located at said main station, having a movable or striking member, a toothed wheel to actuate said movable or striking member, a normally wound train to move said actuator, and an electro-magnet controlled by the circuit which controls the operative connection between the said toothed wheel and said movable or striking member of the hell or indicating device, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a message recording instrument located at a main station, one or more signal transmitters located at substations adapted to transmit two different classes of messages, and an electric signaling circuit connecting the same, of a bell, a two part striking lever therefor, and an actuator for the striking member, and an electro-magnet controlled by-the circuit, which moves one part of the striking lever into engagement with said actuator, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a message recording instrument located at a main station, one or more signal transmitters located at substations adapted to transmit two different classes of messages, and an electric signaling circuit connecting the same, of a special indicating device also located at the main station, a mechanical actuator therefor connected with and moved by the normally wound train of the recording instrument whenever the said train operates, and an electro-magnet controlled by the circuit which controls the operative connection between the said actuator and said special indicating device, substantially as described.
4:. The combination with two or more electric signaling circuits, each containing one or more signal transmitters adapted to transmit twodifferent classes of messages and a message recording instrument having two or more pen magnets controlled by said circuits, of a special indicating device also located at the main station, a mechanical actuator therefor,
driven by the normally wound train of said recording instrument, and an electro-magnet controlled by the circuit which controls the operative connection between said actuator and special indicating device, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a message recording instrument located at a main station, one or more signal transmitters located at substations adapted to transmit two dilferent classes of messages, one of which includes a diiferentiating impulse, and an electric signaling circuit connecting the same, of a bell or other indicating device also located at said main station having a striking lever, a toothed wheel to actuate said striking lever driven by a normally wound train, an electro-magnet affected by said differentiatingimpulse, which controls the operative connection between said toothed wheel and striking lever, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a message recording instrument located at a main station, and one or more signal transmitters located at substations adapted to transmit two difierent classes of signals, one of which includes a prolonged change in the condition of the circuit, and an electric signaling circuit connecting them, of a bell or other indicating device also located at said main station having a striking lever, a toothed wheel to actuate it driven by a normally wound train, and an electromagnet affected by said prolonged change in the condition of the circuit which controls the operative connection between said toothed wheel and striking lever, substantially as described.
