Description
PATENT EEICE.
EMMETT QUINN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS FOR TURNING WOOD.
Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent No. .53,4%@65 dated March 27, 1866.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that l, EMMETT QUINN, ot the city of Washington, District ot' Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Tool for Making Hollow Cylinders or Vessels ot' \Vood; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the construction of the tool that cuts the chips, in combination with the means used to discharge the chips when so cut from the machine while in operation; and it consists of a hollow bar attached to a poston a sliding or vibrating arin 0n the slide-rest of a lathe for turning wood. The rear end ot' this bar passes through the post, or any equivalent device, and is connected to a water-pipe leading from a force-pump or reservoir of sufficient height above to give the current the necessary force to pert'orui its functions. The front end of this bar carries a hollow cutter-stock` so constructed that the chips from the cutters pass into it, and a pipe connecting therewith leads the water, (supplied through the hollow har,) and mixed now with the chips, out through the lower part of the post, and discharging them into any convenient receptacle for that purpose.
A is a section of a lathe, with a bed for the sliding or vibrating arm and post to rest upon. In this instance the arm and post B are in one piece, but, as this is no part of' the invention, a description thereot is considered unnecessar'v.
C is a hollow bar passing through the post B, and the rear end made to connect with the supply-pipe. The front end ot' the bar is inserted into and supports a hollow cutter-stock, a, the lower end ot' which is connected to the return or discharge pipe e, through which the chips from the cutter, mixed with the water supplied through the hollow bar, are conveyed to the rear otl the post and thus discharged. Several ot' these hars, with their cutters and discharge-pipes, can be arranged on the same support and operate simultaneously.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hollow cutter-stock and its cutter, when constructed as described, in combination with a hollow tube supporting said cuttenstock and a dischargepipe, arranged to operate substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
EMMETT QUINN.
