Description

' (No Model.) I
S. C. DOANE. WHEELWRIGHT MACHINE.
' No. 534,820. Patented Feb. 26,1895.
m W Kan W I FFICEQ SETH CHAPMAN DOANE, OF ENGLEVVOOD, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES ELLSWORTH JESSUP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WHEELWRlGHT-lVlACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,820, dated February 26', 1 895.
Application filed May 21,1894. Serial No. 511,956. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH CHAPMAN DOANE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Englewood, in the countyof Cook, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful IVheelwright-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wheelwright machines of that class known as axle-gages, and the object is to provide an improved device whereby the set and gather of vehicle axles and wheels maybe antomatically fixed and ascertained, and the proper pitch, set,and gather of any size and length of vehicle axles be made in accordance with the dish of the wheel and insuring the relative direction of the spokes.
My invention consists in the novel construction of the parts and their combination, as
will be fully specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of the invention: Figure 1 is a perspective of the device applied in operative relation to an axle. Fig. 2 is a detail showing the connection of the gage-bar and pointer in the rest, the retaining plate being removed from the standard of the rest. Fig. 8 is a detail of the gage-bar showing the ball thereon with the bearing-pin on which the pointer is sustained. Fig. 4 is a detail of the retainingplate of the rest, and Fig. 5 is a detail of the scale-plate.
A designates the gage-bar which. is prefer ably made of metal of the desired and proper length to reach over the length of the axle from spindle to spindle, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. On one end of the gagebar is formed a ball 1, projected from and connected to the gage-bar by a neck 2. From the upper surface of the ball 1 vertically projects a pin 3, constituting a bearing for the pointer bar 10. I
B designates a rest constitutingthe device for sustaining the gage-bar on the axle and also containing the bearing-support for the same. This consists of a bar having diverging and downward directed prongs or legs 4, 5, which straddle and set on and over the spindle of the axle as shown. From the middle of the bar of the rest projects a standard 6, in
the lower portion of which is formed a socket 7, to take and hold the ball 1 on the end of 7 has an opening 8, through which the pin 3 passes loosely so as to accommodate the movements of the gage-bar, and in the upper portion of the standard is a passage 9, arranged in the direction of the disposition of the gagebar, in which the end of the pointer-bar 10, is disposed as shown. This passage 9 preferably flares from the middle outward in both directions to allow the pointer to rest horizontally and permit the required play over the gage-plate. The standard 6 is preferably made in two parts, for convenience in detaching and removal, the part 11, being a duplicate in interior conformation to the other and stationary part, and is secured thereto by any properand suitable fastenings. On the gage-bar is arranged the gageplate 12, having a curved recess in its under part as shown, to set on the gage-bar,and on its upper face has graduated measurements thereon, and over the plate is a keeperbar 13, under which the pointer-bar moves and is held from swinging off the plate. On the gage-bar is adjustably fitted a slidingrest 14, consisting of a sleeve adapted to be adjusted on the gage-bar, to which it may be fixed at any point by a set-screw 15, and is forked at its lower end to set over the spindle on the end of the axle farthest from that on which the rest B is placed.
It will be perceived that I provide the gagebar with a ball and socket bearing on which the rest hangs and swings and is thereby automatically adjustable, so that the bar rests in any direction in relation to the axle; and that the pointer is arranged on the bearingpin to move in conjunction with the bar thereby making the rest to automatically adjust to any angle on the axle to which applied, and the set or gather to be correspondingly indicated by the pointer. The gage therefore, when placed in position on an axle adjusts to the size and set or taper and the correct result is indicated on the gage'plate by the position of the pointer.
In operation the device is placed on the axle with the rest 13 on one of the spindles, as indicated in the drawings, and the slidingrest 14 arranged on the spindle at the other end thereof and the requisite deflection ascertained by the indication on the gage-plate. The axle is then made to conform thereto by the usual means, when the device is adjusted and arranged to the spindle, and that made to align with the spindle first corrected or adjusted, and thus both spindles brought in alignment to the desired set or gather of the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an axle-gage the combination of a gage-bar having a ball formed on its end, a rest constructed to set on one of the spindles of an axle and formed with a socket bearing to take the ball of the gage-bar,a sliding-rest on the gage-bar, a pointer-bar pivotally supported in the first named rest, and a scale supported on the gage-bar to indicate the direction of the spindle.
2. In an axle-gage the combination with a gage-bar formed with aball on the end thereof havingavertical projected bearing-pin; arest constructed to set on one of the spindles of an axle and formed with a socket to take the ball of the gage-bar and an opening to receive the vertical pin of the ball, a pointer having a bearing on the pin of the ball of the gagebar, a scale-plate arranged on the gage-bar, and a sliding rest on the gage-bar, as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of two attesting wit- IIGSSGS.
SETH CHAPMAN DOANE. Attest:
