UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS PAUL BRANDT, OF BIENNE, SWITZERLAND, ASSIGNOR TO LOUIS BRANDT &; FRERE, OF SAME PLACE.
STEM-WINDING WATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,780, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed October 18,1894. Serial No. 526,269. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS PAUL BRANDT, a member of the firm of Louis Brandt & Frere, watch-manufacturers, of Bienne, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stem-Winding Watches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists of an improved device for the transmission of the rotation of the stem of stem-winding watches of any system or construction whatever either to the winding-up or tothehand-setting-mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings my improved device is shown in both positions for the handsetting and for'the winding-up of the Watch.
Figure 1 shows the device in position for the winding-up. Fig. 2 shows it in position for the hand-setting. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view of some of the working parts of my device.
G is the stem upon which is disposed the winding'upwheel 0 which is intended to act upon the usual gear-wheels (not shown) causing the winding-up of the main-spring.
(J is the usual sliding pinion, mounted upon a square portion of the stem G and provided with click-teeth c intended to act upon the corresponding click-teeth c of the above mentioned wheel 0 which is free upon the said stem G. The sliding-pinion O is further provided with a teeth-range 0 into which engages a gear-wheel d which is pivoted to the arm 19 of the rocking-lever B as described below.
A spring B tends to maintain the rockinglever B in the rest-position shown in Fig. 1.
My device is composed of a rocking-lever B pivoted at b to the plate A and guided by means of a screw b passing through a slot 1) pivoted to the said lever B and fixed to the plate A. The arm 12 of said lever engages in the circular groove 0 of the sliding-pinion O and the arm b bears the gear-wheel d, which is intended to act upon the usual handsettingwheel D. There is further provided a rocking lever E pivoted at c to the plate of the watch. The arm e of said stem E is provided with a suitable projection engaging a circular groove of the stem G. If one throws the said stem G in the sense of the arrow of Fig. 1 it causes the lever E to be rocked into the position shown in Fig. 2 in which its other arm e bears against the notched end of the arm 12 of the lever B, as shown in Fig. 2, thus throwing the gear-wheel d into gear with the minutewheel D and releasing at same time the clickteeth 0 of the sliding pinion 0 from the clickteeth 0 of the winding-up wheel 0.
In order to secure the rocking-lever E, either at rest or in its acting position, I provide a stopping-spring or brake F fixed to the plate A and passing beneath the rocking-lever E. The end of said spring is bent upward and constitutes a catch f against which bears the arm e of the lever E when the said lever E is at rest as shown in Fig. 1.
When the lever E is acted upon as above specified by throwing the stem G in the sense of the arrow for the purpose of setting the hands, the said lever is obliged to pass over the proj ectionf, depressing the sameand compressing at same time the spring F. The stroke of the lever E is limited by the arm 6 as shown in Fig. 2 and the spring F is then kept compressed, its bent end f pressing against the lower face of the arm 6 of lever E and acting as a brake upon the same so as to prevent its too freely displacing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In hand-setting watches, the combination of a stem G, a rocking-lever 13 provided with two arms I) and b and acting upon a sliding-pinion C of usual construction, and of a rocking-lever E having two arms 6 and 2 with a stopor brake-spring F so disposed that its hooked end fengages the notched end of the arm I) of the lever B and hooks itself to the side of the arm c of the rocking-lever B when the mechanism is at rest, and that its said end facts like abrake upon thelower face of said arm 6 when the lever-E is rocked into the position in which it bears with its arm 6 in the notched end of the arm 11 of lever B, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS PAUL BRANDT.
