CONSTRUCTION AND'OIPERATVION o-F oRoNANoE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,214, dated February 12, 1895.
I Application filed December 22,1894. SerlalNo. 532,659. (NO model.) I
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN FAUST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, inthe State of Maryland, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in the Construction and Operation of Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- 1n gs. Y X
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction and operation of ordnance; and it has for its object the peculiar construction of the gun and its mounting, whereby the muzzle of the gun canbe elevated or depressed or the gun swung horizontally in the arc of a circle in a convenient and easy manner. v
The invention consists in a gunhaving a downwardly-projecting stem on which'the 5o diatelybeneath the recess e. The worm-gear trunnions and a cogged segment are formed, a pedestal in which the trunnions are mounted, aworm-gear carried by the pedestal and engaging with the cogged, segment, means for operating said worm-gear, a base-plate on which the pedestal is revolubly mounted, and means for, turning the pedestal.
Figure 1 of the drawings is, a vertical side elevation of a gun constructed and mounted in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is also a vertical side elevation of the same with the pedestal and base-plate in section, showing the various operating mechanisms. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the gun removed from its mounting.
In the drawings, A represents the gun, on the lower side of which is cast a stem 13, which carries the lateral trunnions C and a cogged segment D, the trunnions and segment being preferably formed integral with the stem.
E is a pedestal, which is recessed, as at e,
to receive the cogged segment D, assh wnin' Fig. 2, the trunnions- O resting in suitable bearings e in theupperend ofthe pedestal, they being held securely therein by metal straps e F is a wormgear, adapted to engage with the cogs on segment D, said worm-gear being located in a recess f in the pedestal immeis mounted on a shaft F, jour'naledin the pedestal as shown,- and provided with a hand wheel f.
g In the lower portion of pedestal E is. revolubly mounted a shaft G, on which, close to the pedestal, is rigidly fixed a gear-wheel H, for a purpose hereinafter stated, said shaft being also provided with a hand-wheel g.
I is a circular base-plate, rigidly secured I 'to any suitable carriage, as J. I In the center of this plate there is a socket 2', to receive a stud e projecting from the bottom of the pedestal; and in the upper surface of the plate there is formed an annular groove 1'', adapted to receive a number of metal balls K, which have their bearing therein and also in a corresponding groove 6 formed in the u uder side of the pedestal. v
I is a cogged rack arranged in circular form on the base-plate I, it being preferably formed integral therewith, said rack being so arranged that the gear-wheel H will mesh with it, whereby as shaft G isturned the pedestal andthe gun mounted thereon will be caused to swing horizontally in the arc of a circle.
From the description above given, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the various manipulations of the gun will be apparent."
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a gun having a downwardly projecting stem carrying the trunnions and a cogged segment, of a pedestal in which-the trunnions are mounted, a worm-gear carried by the pedestal and engaging with the cogged 'segmena means for operatin g said worm-gear, a base-plate on which the pedestal is revolubly mounted, and means for turning the pedestal.
2. The combination, with a gun having a downwardly projecting stem carrying the trunnions and'a cogged segment, of a pedes tal in which the trunnions are mounted, a wormgear carried by the pedestal and engaging with the cogged segment, means for operating said worm-gear, a shaft revolubly moupted in the lower portion of the pedestal and carrying a fixed gear-wheel, meansfor In testimony whereof I afiix my signature turning'saidshaft,a.base1p1ateprcvidedwith in presence of two witnesses. ball-bearings (in which the pedestal is revolubly mounted, and a circular cogged rack on 5 the'base-plate with which said gear-wheel is Witnesses:
adapted -to-engage,spbstautiaily as described WM. HUNTER MYERS, and for the purposes set forth. THOS. KELL BRADFORD.
J OIIN FAUST.
