R. WIND. SHOT CASE AND MEASURE.
(No Model.)
www
'Unteren STATES PATENT reich,
ROBERT VIND, OF TALBOTTON, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO FRANKLIN H. I'IOUGH, OF lVASI-IINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, AND EDVAR-D C. GOODVIN, OF wWORCESTER,
MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOT CASE AND MEASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,835, dated February 5, 1 895. Application filed March 13,1894. Serial No. 503,459. (No model.)
in the county of Talbot and State of Georgia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Shot Case and Measure; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin shot receptacles and measuring apparatus'for use by merchants in selling shot, and it has for its object to provide in combination with a suitable hopper or chamber Within which the shot are kept in storage, an adjustable measuring device provided with mechanism whereby the measure may be readily Withdrawn when lled and returned for refilling, the outlet of the measure being provided with an automatically operated valve which while normally held ina closed position, will, when the measure is Withdrawn from beneath the shot chamber or receptacle, be automatically opened to discharge the shot contained in the measure.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consistsin the peculiar construction, and in the combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specieally defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly shown in the aecompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating the same parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a shotreceptacle and measuring device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2, is a section on the line m, .fr of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail rin perspective of the slide with the measure-attached, showing the valve open.
Reference now being had to the details of `the invention by letter A designates a suitl able chamber or receptacle Within which may be stored shot or other articles of a like nature which it is proposed to keep in stock, to be sold by either Weight or measure. The bottom of this chamber is provided with a suitable opening B, which is closed by a slide C workingin suitable guides formed by the strips a., d upon the under side of the bottom of the receptacle.
The slide C, is made in tivo hinged sections C and C2, connected together at their adjoining ends by suitable hinges C3. The portion C of the slide is provided at a point adjacent to its outer or hinged end, with an opening C4 corresponding in size and form with the opening B in the bottom of the receptacle A, with Which opening, when the slide is moved inward to its extreme limit the opening C4 registers. Fitted within the opening C4 of the slide, and secured therein,is the upper end of the measure D, which consists,
of the sheet-metal upper portion D', which is provided with a telescoping inner portion D2, said telescoping section of the measure being provided with a contracted or hopper shaped lower end, as shown at D3.
TheA body portion D of the measure D is provided upon-opposite sides with depending arms E, which arms are provided with vertical slot-s E', through said slots being passed the outer ends of the Wire E2, which Wire is passed around one half of the circumference of the movable portion D2 of the measure, and at its longitudinal center is soldered or otherwise secured thereto. The outer ends of the said wire E2 are provided with buttons or handles E3 whereby the said portion D2 of the measure may be moved up or down, so as to increase or diminish the capacity of the relieve the said tension of the wire by pressing inward upon the handles or buttons Es, in'changing the point of adjustment.
The valve F is hinged at one of its outer 5 edges to the longitudinal center of a rockshaft F', which shaft is journaled in suitable bearings provided at the lower end of the hopper shaped outlet at the lower end of the measure, the crank F2 at the outer end of the 1o shaft being journaled in the free ends of the curved strip F3, said curved strip being connected with the hinged portion C2 of the slide C, by means of arm or wire F4, hinged at its ends tothe under side of the slide section v 15 and to the curved strip respectively, as shown.
The operation of the device is simple and will from the foregoing description be readily understood. The slide is normally kept at the innermost limit of its movement, as shown zo in Fig. l of the drawings, and when in this position the open upper end of the measure will register with the opening in the bottom be seen that when the slide is again moved 3 5 inward the valve will in like manner be automatically closed.
While I have shown but a single shot receptacle, it is at once evident that they may be arranged in a series, it desired, thus pro' viding within a single case receptacles for 4o the several different sizes of shot.
I do not desire in this application to limit myself to the precise form of slide or valve, or the connections employed whereby the valve is automatically operated by the movements 45 of the slide, as it is evident that these may be varied within certain limits, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let- 5o ters Patent, is
l. In combination with the slide composed of two hinged sections, a measure carried by one of the sections, a hinged valve in the measure, and connections interposed be- 5 5 tween said valve and the other section lof the slide whereby'the valve will be operated by the movement of the slide, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the two part hinged 6o slide, one part of the slide carrying a measure, a liingedvalve controlling the outlet of the measure, the rock shaft carrying the valve and connections interposed between the said shaft and the other section of the 65 hinged slide, whereby the valve will be actuated by the turning of said section of the slide upon its hinges, substantially as specitied.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 7o in presence of two witnesses.
