Beit known that we, GUSTAVOS HEIDEL and ISAAC E. REIS, of the city of SnLous, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in sad or smoothing irons, and which is adapted to all kinds of such articles, such as family irons, tailor irons, and goose irons; and our present invention relates to an improvement upon the iron shown and described in v,Patent No. 454,820, issued .lune 23, 1S91, to Gustavos IIeidel and Mary T. Reis.
Our present invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body portion of the iron, and 2 the handle portion, the latter consisting ot a plate 3, having standards fl, to which is secu red the handheld 5.
On the upper face of the body portion 1 are parallel lugs or projections 6 at the sides ot the iron, near the Iniddle. These lugs or proj ections are under-cut, as shown at 7, Fig. III. At the front end, and on top of the body portion is a lug or projection 8, having a V-notch, as shown in Fig. II. In the upper face of the body portion between the lugs 6, is an y elongated recess or cavity 9 formed with tapering sides. On the under side of the plate 3 are parallel lugs or projections I0, which flare outwardly, as shown in Fig. III and which are adapted to fit between the projections or lugs 6 of the body; the lugs 6 and 10 forming a loose dove-tail joint between the plate and the body portion of the iron. On

so as to tit into the V-shaped notch in the proi jection 8. On the rear or back end of the plate 3 are legs or projections l2, which t or bear upon the upper surface of the body portion 1, when the handle portion is in place.
13 represents a perforation in the plate 3, near its middle, through which passes the non-circular shank 14 of a block l5 having vertical sides, the shank having a head 16 on 6o its upper end, by which it may be raised. When the handle portion of the iron is in place it will be seen that the tapering sides of the cavity permit of the block 15 seating itself centrally therein, while at the same time the tapering rear Wall forces the handle plate forward keeping the Vshaped projec- This oonstruction prevents any lateral or longitudinal movement of the handle plate during 7c the working of the iron. This construction also prevents any binding between the side` lugs on the handle plate and body of the iron and thus avoids any danger of the said parts sticking.
To couple the two parts of the iron, the handle portion is placed over the body portion, with the lugs or projections 10 back of the lugs or projections 6. The handle portion is then pressed forwardly, causing the projections 10 to enter between the projections 6, and when the projection 11 seats in the recess of the projection 8, the block 15 will drop into the recess 9, and hold the two parts of the iron together until the block is raised again, the legs l2 serving to support and Steady the rear part of the handle portion on the body portion.
The advantage of this construction over that shown in the patent referred to, is that there are no tight joints between the projections on the handle portion, and the projections on the body portion, which are liable to stick, on account of the heating of the iron. The projection 11 and the block 15 prevent the forward and lateral movement ot the handle portion with relation to the body portion when the parts are connected, while the block l5 prevents the rearward movement of the handle portion with relation to the body portion, and the lugs 6 and 10 are only utilized for the purpose of preventing the vertical IOO movement of the handle portion with relation to the body portion, for which purpose it isA not necessary to have a tight or close fit between the lugs, but a loose lit is sufficient, as shown in Fig. III, and thus when the iron is heated there is no tendency of the handle portion to be stuck to the body portion, as was found to be the case in the patent mentioned, and the block l may be a mere droplock instead of having a threaded connection with the handle portion, as shown in said patent.
In Fig. V we have shown one arm, of the handle portion removed, to better suit the iron for tailors use.
We claim as our invention* Y In a sad iron, a body portion having parallel side lugs 6 inclined inwardly, and a frontv lug having a V-notch, a handle portion having a plate provided on its under side with legs 12, parallel side lugs 10 inclined outwardly, land a V-shaped lug ll, adapted to iit into the V-notch in the front lug on the body portion and a block having` vertical sides and a stem passing through the plate, said block being adapted to lit in a cavity in the body portion formed with tapering sides and toforce the V-shaped'lng 1l into engagement with the V-noteh in the front lug, whereby any lateral or longitudinal movement of the plate with relation to the body portion during the Working of the iron and any binding between the side lugs is prevented, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
