Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Erica.
lVILLIAM C. HOOD, OF RACINE, WISOONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE RACINE HARD WARE GOMPA NY, OF SAME PLACE.
SCHOOL-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,591 dated February 5, 1895.
Application filed July 9, 1 8 Q4. gerial No. 51 7, 00 3 We model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM C. HOOD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Racine, in the county of Racine, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School-Seats, Opera-Chairs, &5C.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical and noiseless automatic joint, especially designed for school-seats, but equally applicable to opera chairs and other seats; the same consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter specified with refererence to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents an elevation of a portion of a school-seat embodying my improved joint; Fig. 2, a detail partly sectional view illustrating the joint when the seat is about midway of its possible movement in either direction up or down, and Fig. 3, a detail plan view, the shank of the seatbracket being in horizontal section.
Referring by letter to the drawings A represents a standard having an arm I? thereof terminated in a socket O for the reception of a ball D on the shank E of a seat bracket F, the shank itself having play in a slot G that intercepts the hollow of said socket.
In order to have access to the socket, the latter is made sectional and one of these sections is detachably secured in place as clearly illustrated in Fig.
It is to be noticed that the shank of the detachable section of the socket is bolted to the standard-arm B, and that the bolt is below the center of the joint instead of through the latter, whereby I cheapen construction, and lessen friction.
By the employment of ball and socket joints between the standards and the brackets for the seat, the latter will readily tilt up when the occupant on rising exerts a slight pressure of his legs against its front edge. Being in this titled position the seat is in the way of a person about to sit down, and consequently will return to a practically horizontal position incidental with the movement of said person.
In order to render the joint noiseless I prefor to make the ball-portion thereof slightly elliptical where it is joined to the seat bracket, the hollow of the socket being on a true circle. In consequence of this construction and the relative arrangement of the parts said ball will wedge in said socket as the seat comes to the limit of its throw in either direction up or down.
As a further means for rendering the joint noiseless, as well as to compensate for wear in the same, the socket-slot is contracted atthe extremities thereof and consequently there will be a wedging fit of the bracketshank therein as the seat comes to the end of its movement up or down, it being understood that the thickness of said shank is substantially equal to the width of that portion of said slot intermediate of its contracted extremities.
Having now fully what I claim as new, Letters Patent, is
1. A seat standard having an arm terminating in a socket the hollow of which is intercepted by a slot contracted at the extremities thereof, a seat-bracket having its shank engaging the slot, and a ball on the shank in engagement with the socket, the thickness of said shank being substantially equal to the width of that portion of said slot intermediate of its contracted extremities.
2. A seat standard having an arm thereof terminating in a socket the hollow of which is a true circle and intercepted by a slot having contracted extremities, a seat-bracket engaging the slot, and a somewhat elliptical ball on the shank in engagement with the socket.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM 0. H001).
described my invention, and desire to secure by Witnesses:
