No. 533,421. Patented Peb. 5, 1895.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.' 533,421, dated February 5, 1895.
Application filed August 14, 189141. Serial No. 520,318. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, JAMES MARSHALL Aus- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tyrone, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Car-Truck, of which the followingis a specification.
` The invention relates to improvements in car trucks.
The obj ect of the present invention is to improve the construction of trucks for mine and other cars, to increase the durability of the wheels, and to lessen the friction on them in rounding curves.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car truck constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4; is a detail view of the bracing plate. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the journal boxes.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a car truck, having similar sides, composed of upper and lower longitu dinal bars 2 and 3, which are connected at their ends by angle cross-bars' 4: located at the ends of the truck, and each having one flange arranged horizontally and secured by vertical bolts to the upper faces of the longitudinal bars 2, and its other flange depending vertically beyond the longitudinal bars. The lower longitudinal bar 3 is straight to within a short distance of its ends, the end portions 5 being inclined upward, and secured to the lower face of the upper longitudinal bar 2 by vertical bolts 6, which also serve for fastening the angle cross-bars 4. The upper bars are arched at 7 at equal distances from each end of the truck, to receive journal boxes 8, which are provided with rounded tops and straight horizontal bottoms.
The upper longitudinal bars 2, and the lower longitudinal bars 3, are arranged in pairs at each side of the truck, and form at each side of the same wheel spaces 9, receiving car wheels 10 securedcentrally to short axles 11, projecting laterally from opposite sides of the wheels, and terminating in journals arranged in the journal boxes 8., A pair of journal boxes is provided for each wheel, and each journal box has grooves 12 and 13 in its up- `per and lower faces or edges receiving respectively the arched portions 7 of the upper longitudinal bars 2, and the straight horizontal portion of the lower bar 3. Each journal box is provided at each side with a vertical web 14 extending from the upper face of the lower longitudinal bar 3 to the lower face of the upper one, and provided at its outer vertical edge with a groove receiving a bolt 15 and conforming to the configuration of the same. The bolt passes through the longitudinal bars, and the vertical webs of the journal boxes support the longitudinal bars, and increase the strength of the truck.
The longitudinal bars are supported between the journal boxes by vertical plates 16, interposed between them and having its upper and lower edges bearing against the adjacent faces of thelongitudinal bars; and the `vertical edges of the plate 16, are provided with grooves 17, receiving and conforming to the conguration of vertical bolts 18 which pass through the longitudinal bars.
The journal boxes receive the journals, and extend inward into the space 9, and bear against the side faces of the hubs of the wh eels, and thereby prevent the axles from shifting longitudinally in the journal boxes. This ar rangementgreatly increases the durability of wheels, and prevents the hubs from being worn away before the rims; and it greatly `lessens the friction incident to wheels rounding curves, and preserves the wheels at the Same diameter.
It will be seen that the truck is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction,
that it possesses great strength and durabil- IOO to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- 5 1. In a car truck, the combination of the up- 1o and provided in their upper and lower faces with grooves receiving the upper and lower longitudinal bars, said journal boxes being l provided at each side with vertical webs ex- Y, tending from the top to the bottom bars and r 5 having vertical grooves, and vertical bolts passing through the upper and lower bars and arranged in the vertical grooves of the webs, substantially as described.
2. In a car truck, the combination of the upzo perlongitudinal bars arrangedinpairs ateach side of the truck and forming intervening Wheel spaces, the lower longitudinal bars arranged in pairs and having their end portions extended upward and connected to the upper bars, the journal boxes arranged in pairs at each side of the truck and having grooves to receive the longitudinal bars and provided at their sides with vertically grooved webs, the vertical plates disposed longitudinally between the upper and lower bars and provided at their ends with Vertical grooves, bolts passing through the longitudinal bars and arranged in the vertical grooves of the plates, and the journal boxes, and the angle crossbars connecting the ends of the longitudinal bars, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed nay-signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MARSHALL AUSTIN.
