tjnrrnn dramas CARL BEUTTEL, OF IDLEIVILD, OHIO.
VEGETABLE-SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,189, dated January 29, 1895. Application filed August 13, 1894- Serial No. 520,146. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL BEUTTEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Idlewild, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Vegetable-Slicer; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, attention being called to the accompanying drawings, with the reference-numerals marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The subject of this invention is a vegetable slicer for the purpose of cutting into slices, vegetables like potatoes, apples, &c., before or after they are peeled.
The invention consists of the general construction of the device, a leading feature of which is the adjustment of the knives as to number, whereby a vegetable may be divided into more or less parts.
In the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims is found a full description of my invention, its operation, parts and construction, the latter being also illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical side-elevation, partly in section, of the device showing the parts in position before operation. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing parts in position after operation. Fig. 3, is a top-view of the receiver. Fig. 4:, is an enlarged horizontal section of the same taken on line 4=--4: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5, Fig. 6, is an enlarged sectional detail view showing means of holding the knives in place.
The device consists of a receiver 8, provided with springs 9, between which the vegetable is held and which approach each other with their lower parts for the purpose of supporting smaller vegetables and hold them centrally above the knives 10, secured below them in the lower part of the receiver. The springs are preferably secured to a ring 11, supported in a recess 12 around the upper, inner edge of the receiver and held in place by lugs 13. They become thereby readily removable for cleaning or other purposes.
The knives out with their upper horizontal edges and are provided with flanges 14, by
which they are heldin position. For such purpose the knives are inserted from below, their flanges being pushed into recesses in which they closely fit and which are formed by strips 15, secured to the inside of the receiver. See detail view in Fig. 6.
The knives are all of equal dimensions and extend to the center, where they meet and touch each other, thereby supporting themselves at this point. They are held up within their recesses by a ring 16, secured against the lower edge of the receiver and extend inwardly sufficiently to reach under the outer edges of the knives which is all the support required to hold them vertically in position. The number of knives corresponds with the largest number of slices which may be required in any case and from that the slices may be made larger by removal of more or less knives, as may be required and which is done by removing ring 16 after which the superfluous knives may be pushed out.
The "vegetable is pushed against the knives for the purpose of its division, by a plunger 17, carried at the lower end of a guide-rod 18, moving in bearings 20, 20, of a standard 21 which is preferably affixed to the receiver 8 so as to have all parts in one. At the upper end of rod 18 is a knob 22, and between the latter and its upper bearing is a spring 23, whereby the plunger is returned after each operation. After a vegetable is placed be tween the centering springs within the receiver, the plunger is pushed down as shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the vegetable is pressed against and through the knives and drops out below divided in slices. Springs 9 during the downward passage of the vegetable present no resistance and yield readily to larger ones.
In order to obtain a complete separation of the object to be sliced and to prevent the plunger being driven against the edges of the knives at each operation, the latter is provided with grooves 24 on its under side whereby its main-part is permitted to pass the knife-edges, the latter entering said grooves, which are correspondingly arranged. The knives are thereby enabled to pass fully and completely through the vegetable. The length of spring 23, may be properly proportioned so that it becomes completely compressed and prevents a further depression of the plunger, slightly before the knives touch the bottom of grooves 24, whereby a full contact at each operation is prevented and the cutting edges of the knives are protected.
In order to keep plunger 17 always in proper position so that the position of the grooves in its under side corresponds with the position of the knives and enables them to enter the former, guide-rod 18 is provided with a longitudinal groove, into which a pin enters, whereby the plunger, which is rigidly connected to the guide-rod,-is prevented from turning after being once adjusted.
The device may be supported in any suitable way, a preferable one being to set the receiver within the top of a table. It is my intention however to use this device principally in connection with a vegetable-peeler as described in my Patent No. 515,394, in which case I set the receiver in the top of the table forming a part of said machine and for which purpose I provide a flange 26 on the outer upper edge of the receiver which rests on the table-top 27, of said machine.
Having described my invention, I claim as new- 1. In a vegetable slicer, the combination of the receiver with the cutting knives, the centerin g springs above the latter, secured to and in the lower part of the receiver, a ring 16 secured against the lower edge of the latter, to hold up the knives and a reciprocating plunger, to push the vegetable through the knives.
3. In a vegetable slicer, the combination of the receiver with the centering springs therein, the cutting-knives provided with flanges 14, strips 15 secured to the inside of the lower part of the receiver in a manner to form recesses into which flanges 1 1, of the knives enter, a ring 16 secured against the lower edge of the latter to hold up the knives and a reciprocating plunger, to push the vegetable through the knives.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL BEUTTEL.
