" .INITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NAPOLEON P. BEAN, OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS;
SKIRT-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,859, dated January 22, 1895. Application filed August 13, 1894:. Serial No. 520,133. (No modeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON P. BEAN, of Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber Garments, of which the following is a description sufficien tly full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figurel is an under side plan view of my improved rubber garment; and Fig. 2 a sectional view illustrating the use of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in both the figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to an attachment fora water-proof or Mackintosh garment to protect the skirts of the wearers, it
being particularly designed for use by women and it consists in certain novel features hereeyes, h. Said diaphragm is provided with two leg openings, t, the material being gathered around said openings as shownin Fig. 1 and an elastic, 1:, run into said gather.
The material of the protector is stayed at w, diametrically running between the leg openings and centrally between said openings at w, it is shirred or gathered and an elastic tape or cord, y, inserted in said shirring acting contractively to draw the leg openings toward each other.
The device is particularly designed for use with rubber boots, 0, but it will be understood is applicable for use without said boots.
The garment, A, being adjusted on the wearer, the skirts, b, are folded upward and the legs inserted in the openings, t, the elastic, o, of which causes them to cling closely around the leg just below the knee. The hooks, m, are then engaged in the eyes, h,supporting the protector in horizontal position and concealing the skirts as in Fig. 2. The elastic stay, y, permits fr'ee action of the legs in walking, the protector being sufficiently full as indicated by the pleats, z, in Fig. 1 to permit the legs to move readily ina manner which will be understood by those conversant with such matters without a more explicit description.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is The garment, A, provided with the band, g, on its inner face in combination with the protector, D, comprising a diaphragm provided with the leg-openings, t, having elastic gathers, 'u; the diametrically arranged stay, w, shirred between said openings; the elastic cord, y, in said shirring" and'hooks and eyes for 'detachably securing the diaphragm to said band, substantially as described.
NAPOLEON P. BEAN.
