SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,777, dated January 22, 1895.
Application filed November 22, 1893. Serial No. 491,681. (No modelll To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEOPOLD GLASER and ADALBERT KWIATKOWSKI, subjects of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and residents of Posen-Wilda, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Portable Lounge for Use in Railway Carriages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The improved portable lounge for use in railway carriages consists of a cloth, adapted to be suspended from the rack of the compartment and extending vertically downward, its end being laid along the seat of the carriage. The traveler sits on the part of the cloth extending along the seat and rests against the vertical portion in which a strap or cloth bandforming a headrest is provided as well as a loop for supporting the arm and a cushion for the head to rest against. Straps,
with buckles may be arranged at the back of the cloth to enable the employment of the same for packing up small luggage, when it is not required to use it as a lounge.
In order to make the present specification more easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 represents a part elevation of the front of the lounge cloth; Fig. 2, a similar elevation showing the back of the cloth. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement of the lounge in a railway carriage compartment.
The cloth a is provided at the top with hooks c 0 attached bymeans of adjustable cords b b, said hooks serving to suspend the cloth from the rack of a railway compartment as shown at Fig. 3. In front of the cloth at a suitable height for the head of a passenger sitting on the seat of the carriage, is arranged a strap or band f, which may be padded and serves to support the head of the passenger, being adjustable in its position by means of hooks g and eyes 9 on the cloth (represented in dotted lines in Fig. 1). The hooks and eyes referred to are arranged in a pocket 6 underneath a cushion d which latter is attached to the front of the cloth and forms a head rest. To the back of the cloth may be attached straps k k by means of cross pieces a d which serve to secure the cloth when rolled up.
In use'the cloth is suspended from the rack1'5 5 Z of the compartment and its lower end is extended out along the seat m. Thus the passenger sits on the lower end and may lean against the vertical part placing his head in the strap f and supporting the arm in a second strap or loop h. The weight of the body resting on the lower part ofthe cloth will retain it in position and prevent any slipping of the same.
When not in use as a lounge the cloth may be employed for packing up light traveling articles and thus serves a double purpose.
The device will serve equally well to support a person in a sitting or lying posture.
We claim as our invention- 1. The combination of the cloth a having at its upper end adjustable hooks c c and havingaband or strap f for the support of the head, said band being adjustable in position by means of hooks g g andeyes g g on the cloth, a cushion d on said cloth and pocket 6 underneath the same to conceal the eyes g substantially as described and shown.
2. The combination of the cloth a having at its upper end adjustable books a o and having a band or strap f for the support of the head, said band being adjustable in positionby means of hooks g on the same and eyes 9 on the cloth, a cushion d on the said cloth and pocket 6 behind same for the reception of the adjustable attachment of the band f and a second loop or band it arranged below the cushion for the purpose substantially as described.
3. The combination of a cloth at having at its upper end adjustable hooks c o and having a band or strap f adjustable in its positionby means of hooks g and eyes g on the cloth, a cushion d on said cloth and pocket e for the reception of the adjustable connection of the strap f, a second loop or band 71. arranged below the cushion andstraps k 7.: at the back of said cloth for the purpose substantially as described and shown.
