SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,732, dated January 15, 1895 Application filed September 7,1894:- Serial No. 522,354. (No model.)

Be it'known that I, GUSTAV L. HEYMAN, of Oarlisle, in the county of Nicholas and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Pads for Breast- Straps, &c., of which the following is a specification. I

My invention is designed to provide a cheap, simple, and easily applied pad,which may be quickly fitted to any breast strap, breeching, or belly-band, and which being always smooth and pliable will prevent chafing and keep the bearing surfaces 'of the animal cool and comfortable.

'It is an improvement in pneumatic pads, or that form of pad which is inflated with air, and it consists of a pad having at its marginal edges overlapping lips, hooks, or claws, into which the breast strap is inserted by being rolled or bentlongitudinally and then allowed to expand and straighten out beneath the lips, hooks or claws as hereinafter fully described.

Figure 1 is a side view of my pad applied to a breast strap. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of the same through line 22; and

Fig. 3 isa side viewof a modification.

In the drawings, A represents the breast strap, and B is the pad. This pad is composed of soft rubber with a'tightly sealed air ened edges are formed in one piece into overlapping lips c c that project upon the side opposite the bearing surfaces and are designed to overlap and thus hold the pad upon the edges of the breast strap. These overlapping edges c maybe constructed as continuous lips as shown, or, if preferred, they may be arranged at intervals along the length of the pad as hooks or claws, as shown in Fig. 3. When constructed as a continuous lip the latter will be cut away at the points where it passes the supporting strap A.

In applying this pad to the breast strap, the latter is bent or rolled longitudinally, as shown in dotted lines, and is then allowed to expand into and between the overhanging lips or claws, which then securely hold the two together.

This pad attachment is universal in its application, is easily and quickly applied or removed, and involves no alteration of nor injury to any part of the harness to which it maybe applied. It is also to be sold as a separate article of manufacture, and may be applied by any one to the harness without calling in the services of a harness maker.

I am aware that pneumatic pads are not broadly new, and therefore claim only my special construction and arrangement.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A harness pad consisting of a rubber air chamber formed in one piece with marginal overlapping lips or claws projecting upon the opposite side from the bearing surfaceof the pad substantially as and for the purpose described. V
