INSULATED PIPE-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,328, dated January 8,1895.
Application filed June 6,1894. smart. 513,656. (Nomodeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MELVIN J. LOOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Insulated Pipe-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct an improved electric joint for combined electro and gas fixtures, the main object of my invention being to so construct the coupling that it can be loosened when the fixture is applied to the gas pipe. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1, is aperspective view of my improved insulated coupling. Fig. 2, is a section on the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. tached perspective view of the metallic parts. Fig. 5, is a view of a modification of my invention.

B is the fixture pipe;
The pipe A is screwed into a block 0 and the pipe B screwed into the block D. The openings in these blocks align so that the gas will pass from the pipe A through the coupling in the pipe B, but the block 0 is insulated from the block D by a sheet a of non-- conducting material, clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and the upper face of the block D is recessed, as shown in Fig. 3. The lower face of the block 0 is shaped to fit this recess to prevent the blocks shifting out of line. The insulating material e conforms to the shape of the blocks. Above the block 0 is a plate D insulated from the block 0 by a nonconducting strip 6' and at each side of the coupling are metallic straps F F which confine the blocks B and O and the plate D in position.

The upper face of the plate D is recessed, as shown in Fig. 3, forming a socket for the rounded portions f of the straps F so that Fig. 4, is a dethey can he swung under the block D and when once in position these straps rigidly confine the parts together. i
The opening (1 in the plate D is longer than the pipe A to prevent electrical contact between the parts.
The opening 0 in the block G and theopening 01 in the block D are contracted at their inner ends forming shoulders which prevent the pipes A and B being accidentally screwed into the coupling to such an extentas to come in contact. 7 I
While I prefer to make the coupling in the shape shown in Fig. 1, it may be slightly modified without departing from my invention and the straps F F may be shrunk on instead of forced on but by the construction shown the coupling can be readily taken apart if necessary to insert fresh nonconducting material.
In some instances the plate D may bedispensed with, and insulating material may be inserted between the upper edge of thestraps F and the block 0 as illustrated in Fig. 5.
-I claim as my invention- 1. The combination in an insulated joint, of the blocks OvandD adapted to receive the pipes, insulating material between the blocks and straps for confining the blocks together and. to the insulating material, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a nonconducting joint, of the blocks D and C, insulated one from another and into which the two pipes are adapted to be screwed, a plate D insulated from the block 0 and straps for confining the blocks and plate together, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the block D screw threaded to receive a pipe having its upper surface recessed, with a block 0 adapted to receive a pipe and having its lower surface shaped to correspond to the block D, insulating material between the two blocks, a plate above the block 0 and insulating material between the plate and the block and means for confining the plate and blocks together, substantially as described.
