SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 532,231, dated January 8, 1 895.

land, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices forLubricating Hydraulic-Elevator Cylinders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as `will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same.
. My invention relates to improvements in devices for lubricating hydraulic elevator cylinders; and the object is to provide an inexpensive device by which any desired quantity of oil may be applied to a hydraulic elevator cylinder at any time.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved device, the cylinder and oil reservoir being shown in longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a top view of the inner end of pipe D, the curved perforated end thereof, and the drip pan; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the device on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

A closed reservoir C is secured to the crosshead, orto the piston rod near the cross-head, so that preferably said reservoir will never enter the cylinder. One pipeE is connected with the lower end of the reservoir, and extends therefrom to and through the piston,- the end of said pipe being open. In the pipe `E is a valve e; and when this valve is open, the pressure in the reservoir C is the same as the pressure in the cylinder. A cock e is also placed in this pipe so that when the valve e is closed, the contents of said reservoir may be drained off. p Y
A pipe D is connected with the upper par? of the reservoir, and it extends therefrom into the cylinder to a point close to the piston. A curved pipe d, secured to the inner end of pipe D, lies above the piston rod, and has in ts upper side small perforations through which oil may be forced against the upper wall of the cylinder. Below the pipe d is a lof said pan onto the cylinder.

This drip pan curves downward on both sides 0l' the piston rod, and both ends are open, whereby the oil which drips from the perforated pipe d is caught and prevented from falling upon the piston rod, and then flows down to and out of the open ends In the pipe D is a valve d', which is placed near the reservoir so that its handle may be reached and operated at any time.
The parts being assembled as described, the Valve e is closed and the reservoir is nearly filled with oil. When the valve is opened, water from the cylinder A enters the reservoir, filling the saine. The oil will of course be on top of the water, and the pressure in the reservoir will be equal to the pressure in the cylinder. When it is desired to lubricate the cylinder the valve d is opened, whereupon oil is forced through pipe D and out through the perforations in pipe d, until the said valve d is closed. All the oil which drops from the pipe d is caught by the drip pan; and the oil in the drip pan ows down toward both ends thereof, and from these ends it drops onto the cylinder. The drip pan prevents the oil from getting onto the piston rod, and therefore it will be easier to keep the apparatus clean. When the oil in the reservoir is exhausted, or nearly exhausted, the valve e is closed, and the water in the reservoir is drained off through the cock e', and the reservoir is refilled with oil.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of a hydraulic cylinder, its piston and piston rod, with a closed reservoir secured'to said rod, a pipe connected with the lower part of said reservoir and extending to and through the piston, a valved pipe D connected with the upper part of said receptacle and extending therefrom to a point near the piston, and a perforated pipe secured to the inner end of pipe D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a hydraulic cylinder, its piston and piston rod, with a closed reservoir secured to said rod, a valved pipe connected with the lower part of saidl reservoir and extending therefrom to and through the piston, a valved pipe D connected with the upper part of said receptacle and extendy the cylinder, substantially as and for the puring therefrom into the cylinder, a, curved perpose specified.
