To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, of Sharon, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Applying Plastic Material to Lacing-Hooks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to dies for applying plastic material to lacing hooks; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereto appended and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an end elevation of a set of dies embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on line 2, 2 on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the bed plate and the removable bed dies. Fig. 3 is an edge view'of the head supporting bed die. Fig. 4 isa transverse section of the same on line 3, 3, on Figs 3 and 5. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan of the same. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the neck supporting die. Fig. 7 is a transverse section of the same on line 4, 4, on Figs. 6 and 8. Fig. 8 is an inverted plan of the same. Fig. 9 is a central vertical section of a lacing hook with its head covered with plastic material by my improved dies, but drawn to an enlarged scale, and Fig. 10 is a sectional elevation of the dies with the metal hook in position therein.
In the drawings A is the bed-plate having formed in its upper face a shallowtransverse groove a. in which are fitted side by side the head supporting and shaping die I; and the neck supporting die plate 0, and said bedplate has formed therein beneath the die plates b and c the perforation d to receive the shank e of the lacing hook, and also has set in its upper side the guide studs f, f, and register pin g as shown.
The die plate 12 has formed in its upper surface an annular shallow recess h of a depth equal to the thickness of the plastic material that it is desired to have beneath the metal head of the hook. In the center of the recess 71. is an upwardly projecting boss or hub o the upper surface of which is on a level with the upper surface of the die-plate b. The plate I) formed in their contiguous edges semi-circular notches to engage the registering pin g.
B is a vertically movable plate fitted to and 'movable on the guide studs f, f, and has set therein the movable head shaping die 0 as shown. v
The operation of my invention is as fol lows: The metal hook, the head of which is a plain disk of metal having parallel upper and lower sides, is slipped upon the thin edge It of the plate I with the under side of the head 6 thereof resting upon the boss or hub t' and the flange e'of said hook within the recess 3'. The plate I) is then placed in the groove a of the bed plate A with the semi-circular notch in the edge thereof engaging the side of the pin g. The plate 0 is then placed in position in the groove abeside the plate b, with the semicircular notch in its edge inengagementwith the pin g, and. the curved surface 0 bearing against the neck e of the lacing hook, as shown in Fig. 10. Apieceof pyroxylineorlike material of sufficient size and heated to bring it into a plastic state is placed upon the upper side of the metal head ofthe hook beneath the die 0 which is then moved downward upon said plastic material, with sufficient pressure to impart the desired shape to the top of the head, and force the plastic material beneath said head, so as to fill the space between the under side of the metal head of the hook and the bottom of the recess 71. up to and surrounding the boss or hub 41. The die 0 is then lifted, the plates 1) and c are removed from the groove a and separated, when the hook can be removed from plate b by lifting it until the boss or hub t is removed from the coveringmaterial and then moving said hook in a direction parallel to the top and bottom faces of the plate b. By this construction of the'dies the metal heads of lacing hooks can be covered with a plastic material upon the bottom as well as the top, without the trouble with a perforation to receive the shank of the.
hook; apair of hook holding plates detachably secured to said bed plate one of which is provided with an upper annular recess surrounding a central boss or hub upon which the metal head of the hook is supported, and a lower recess to receive the flange" or head of the shank; and a vertically movable pressure die for shaping the plastic material.

The combination of the bed-plate A provided with the groove a and the perforation d; the registering pin g set in said plate; the plate I) provided with the recesses h and j and the hub or boss '5 and a semicircular notch to engage the pin g; the plate 0 provided with a similar notch to engage said pin 9 and the curved surface 0' to bear upon and support the neck of the hook to be operated upon; and the vertically movable die 0 all constructed, arranged and operating substantially as described.
