' T. H. SMITH.
NUT LOOK.
(No Model.)
V No. 532,169.
Patented Jan. 8, 1895.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. SMITH, OF EIGI-ITY-FOUR, PENNSYLVANIA.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,169, dated January 8, 1895.
Application filedA ri] 6,1894. Serial No. 506,646. (No model.)
to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany- .ing drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 indicates a horizontal section of two adjacent rails, showing the application of my improved nut lock. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a rail, with the nut lock applied. Figs. 4. and 5 are respectively an end elevation and a plan of the lock block. Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively a plan and side elevation of serrated nut.
My invention relates to that class of devices, adapted to prevent a nut from unscrewing, or working off from a threaded bolt, and called nut locks, and consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which likefigures indicate like parts wherever they occur.
Referring to said drawings 1-1 are adjacent portions of two rails.
2 is a plate having a portion 3 thereof of greater thickness than the remaining part,
forming a shoulder in which a bolthole 4 is formed, for the reception of the bolt 5, which passes through similar holesin the rails and splice bars 6-6. Said plate 2 is provided with an oblique slot 7, which terminates in a horizontal slot 8, immediately rearward of the bolthole 4 in the thick portion of said plate.
which the lock block 10, rests when the upper inner edge of the same engages the nut 11, the inner portion 12 being circular in shape and of greater diameter than the outer portion and serrated or toothed to admit of this, thus locking said nut, and preventing the same from turning when screwed tight upon the bolt. Said lock block is formed of two bars 13 and 14, connected by a horizontal cylindrical or oblong stem 15, the inner bar 13, being of a thickness equal to the shoulder formed on the plate 2 and adapted to move freely in the recess formed between the splice bars 6-6 and said plate 2.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a nut lock, the combination of the nut, the inner end of which is circular in shape, and of greater cross section than the outer portion of the same, and the periphery having serrations or teeth, a plate having a bolthole in one end of the same, and a slot extending toward the end opposite said bolthole, the end of said slot adjacent said bolthole extending below the lower edge of said bolthole, in combination with a lock block, adapted to rest in the end of the slot in said plate adjacent to said nut, and to engage the teeth thereon, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature and seal this 3d day of March, A. D. 1894.
In presence of J AS. .I. MOAFEE, C. A. WILLIAMS.
