To di whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALLEN I. CREQUE, of New York, county of New York, and State of' New York, have invented an Improvement in Washbowls, of which the followin g description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to wash-bowls and has for one of its objects to improve the construction of the same, whereby the outlet of the said bowl may be rendered air or gas tight to prevent the admission of sewer and other gases into the house during the night. This feature of my invention I accomplish by means ot a sealing device to be described, which is adapted to be inserted into the main outlet pipe below the point where the overliow pipe empties therein, the said sealing device iitting the said main outlet pipe gas and water tight so that gas is prevented from passing up into the bowl, the over-flow and main outlet pipe above the said seal being preferably filled with water to render the obstruction to the passage of sewer gas absosutely sure, the said water being prevented from being siphoned out of' the said trap and pipes by the said seal.
My improved sealing device is adapted to be removed in the day time, a removable strainer or sieve being then placed in the outlet pipe, the said trainer being removed when the sealing device is inserted therein.

The particular features in which my invention consists will be pointed out in the claims at the end of' this specification.

The bowl A, provided at its bottom, see Fig. 3, with a main outlet a, and at is sides with an over-flow passage a may be composed of porcelain or other material suoli as now commonly used. The outlet passage a is contracted or made of smaller diameter for a poi'- tion of its length, to form a shoulder a2 to support a packing ring a3, see Fig. l,the said packing ring being shown in section as a right-angled triangle, the hypotenuse a* ot which forms a seat for a nozzle ai, which is extended from inside the bowl A through the outlet passage a, and beyond the outside of the said bowl.
The portion of the nozzle a projecting beyond the bowl A is screw threaded as shown on its outside, to be engaged by a threaded ring a having a flange a7, a packing as being interposed between the said ring and the bowl A.
The nozzle ai receives within it one end Z), see Figs. 1 and 5, of a pipe section b', having a flange h2, between which and the ring ai is another packing ring h3, the pipe section h and packing ringl)3 being secured in position by a clamping device herein shown as a ring b4 fastened to the clamping ring a6 by bolts b5 extended through the said clamping rings and secured by nuts b, the said packing rendering the bowl water tight at its main outlet. The pipe section b is provided with an angular extension or branch bT united as shown by a wipe joint 138 to one end of an overlow pipe b9, the other end of which is united by a Wipe joint blo to one end of the overflow section hm. See Figs. 1, 8 and 9.
The over-flow section blz, see Figs. 8 and 9, has a flange c made to t a shoulder or lange c around the overflow passage a', a packing ring c2 being interposed between the shoulder c and flange c, the said packing ring and overflow section Z212 as shown being secured to the bowl A by bolts not shown, but which are inserted' through holes c3, see Fig. 8, in the ears c4 of the liange c, and through holes or openings cX in the flange c. See Fig. 2.
The pipe section h has connected to or forming part of it one end ot a pipe as c5, see Fig. 1, whichis extended into an opening in TCO a cap c, a second opening in said cap having connected to it. a bent pipe c7, the said cap having an outlet which is closed by a threaded plug cs,.the pipes c5 c7 and cap c6 forming a trap of ordinary form and such as now commonly used in connection with wash bowls and sinks.
To prevent the passage ot sewer gas through the trap referred to and into the room or closet in which the wash-bowl maybe located, I have provided a sealing device by which ythe pipe Zi or the pipec5 below the branch D7 is rendered gas and water tight.
Thesealing device referred to, see Figs. l and 4, is herein shown as composed essentially of two rings or disks d, d', preferably of rubber, having a central hole through which is extended a foot daof a spindle or stem d3, the said rings or disks being separated by a washer d4 and being secured on the said foot, as shown, by a nut d5, a washer Z6 being shown interposed between the said nut and the disk CZ. rEhe rings or disks CZ, d', are preferably beveled at their edges or periphery in opposite directions. The spindle or stem d3 will preferably have upon it a collar C17, see Fig. lO, joined by radial ribs d8 to a ring dg, the latter being designed to rest upon the upper end l) of the pipe section b to form with a pin d10 on the spindle d, a stop for the said spindle when the latter is in its elevated position, shown in Fig. l. The collar d? has a groove or notch e through which the pin d10 may be passed to change the position of the disks d, d', in the pipes b and c5.
As shown in Fig. l the spindle d3 and the attached disks d, d', are in the position to be occupied by them at night time when it is desired to prevent the admission of sewer gas into the house, the pin d10 being above the collar all and the spindle turned so as to bring the said pin out of line with the groove or notch e, the said pin resting upon .the said collar and serving to support the said spindle and disks in elevated position.
The disks d, d', fit the pipe ZJ gas tight, so that any gas in the pipe c5 is prevented from passing up above the said disks, and the said disks also prevent the water either in the pipe b above the said disks or in the cveriiow pipe or bowl A or in the trap below the said disks from being siphoned off or evaporated.
During the day-time, the sealing device is removed, the pin d10 being placed in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, and the spindle and attached disks and also the collar are removed by withdrawing the said spindle by means of the handlef.
In the daytime an ordinarystrainerf', such as shown in Fig. 7, may be seated upon the end b of the pipe section b', it having a handle f2 if desired, by which it may be easily removed as shown in Fig. 5.
The outlet passage a may be closed, when it is desired to use the bowl in the day time, by a plug f3 fitted into the nozzle a5, and having a ring]c4 by which it may be removed.
When desired the pipes b and c5 may be cleansed from dirt and grease by working the spindle cl3 up and down in the said pipes, the disks d., d', removing the said dirt or grease adhering to the sides ofthe said pipes.
I prefer to employ a sealing` device composed of two disks but it is evident one disk may be dispensed with.y
l. A wash bowl, an outlet nozzle therein, an outlet pipe of uniform diameter from the nozzle to the bend of the usual trap, and an over flow pipe opening into the outlet pipe below the bowl, combined with a sealing and cleaning device, consisting of a suitable number of flexible disks, and a spindle to which they are aftixethsaid spindle being of suiiicient length to be worked with its disks up and down the entire length of the outlet pipe from the outlet nozzle to the trap and also being freely removable at .pleasure together with its flexible disks from the pipe and bowl, substantially as described.

The bowl A, nozzle a5, packing a3 interposed between said nozzle and bowl, ring a, packing a8 interposed between the ring a@ and bowl A,clai nping ring b4 and packing b3, combined with the pipe section b having a iange and an end l) to fit the nozzle, and with means to fasten the said rings to-gether, substantially as described.

The bowl, the nozzle d5, and the independent pipe section b and the pipe c5, the interior of the pipe section b and the interior of the pipe c5 being Hush to form a uniform continuous passage, combined with a removable sealing device comprising a ring of elastic or yielding material anda spindle or stem d3, the said removable sealing device being capable ot' effectively cleansing the outlet pipe, substantially as described.

The bowl, its nozzle provided with an ordinary plug-seat and adapted to receive a removable strainer, an outlet pipe, and means to connect it with the nozzle, the said outlet pipe being substantially straightand of uniform diameter from the nozzle to the bend in the usual trap, and adapted to receive a cornbined sealing and cleaning device consisting of a suitable number of disks and a spindle to which the disks are secured, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. A wash bowl having an outlet pipe of uniform diameter, and an overflow pipe connected to it, combined with a sealing device comprising a disk or ring of flexible material and a spindle and a stopping device, the said sealing device and its stopping device being bodily removable freely and at pleasure through the bowl, substantially as described.
