Be it known that we, W'ILLIAM .ll. REY- NOLDS and JOHN W. De BERRY, citizens of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Hardin and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in gates.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinging gates, and to provide a simple and inexpensive one which may be readily openedand closed a distance from either side of it to enable it to be operated without leaving a vehicle or dismounting.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with this invention, and shown closed. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the latch.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 designates a supporting frame, comprising a hinge post 2, to which a gate 3 is swung, alatch post 4, and a top bar 5 arranged horizontally and connecting the said posts. The gate 3 is hinged in any suitable manner to the post 2, and it is provided near its top with a rearward extending horizontally disposed arm 6, forminga lever, and adapted to swing the gate to open and close it.
The rearward extending arm of the gate carries apair of oppositely disposed swinging pulleys 7, which are mounted in blocks 8, having shanks 9 arranged in a bifurcation 10 of a plate 11, and secured therein by a vertical pivot 12. The oppositely disposed pulleys receive the end portions 13 of a continuous operating wire or rope 14, which extends from the arm of the gate in opposite directions to pulleys 15 and 16 of uprights 17 and 18 located at opposite sides of the gate at suitable distances therefrom. The operating rope extends directly from one upright to the other longitudinally of the road way, and is supported at an intermediate pointby a hori- SOD.
zontally disposed pulley 19, mounted on the supporting frame, near the top of the'jgate. The terminals of the continuous operating rope or wire depend from the swinging pulleys and pass through eyes 20 of a latch bar 21, and have weights 22 secured to them. The latch bar 21 is disposed substantially horizontally on the gate, it is pivoted to the rear stile of the same, andit extends rearward therefrom. The front end of the latch has a limited movement in an opening 23 of the gate, and it engages a keeper 24.- of the latch post. The rear portion of the latch bar is disposed beneath the rearward extending arm of the gate, and it carries a weight 25, which normally holds the latch bar in engageinent with the keeper of the latch post when the gate is closed.
The terminals of the operating wire or rope areloosely arranged in the eyes of the latch bar, and the weights 22 are located beneath the same; and when the gate is closed, and it is desirable to open it, a person approaching in the direction of the upright 17 takes hold of that portion of the operating rope, which extends longitudinally of the road way, and moves the same in the direction of the gate. This lifts the adjacent weight 22, and carries the same into engagement with the latch bar, to raise the rear end of the same and disengage the front end thereof from the keeper of the latch post; and a continued movement of the operating rope in the direction of the gate, causes the latter to open from the person. After passing through the gate, the latter is closed by a reverse movement of the operating rope. In approaching the gate from the opposite side, the operating rope is drawn toward the person opening it, and the gate opens toward the per- The upright 17 is located closer to the gate than the other upright, as, on the side of the former upright, the gate opens from the operator, and the other upright must be located a sufficient distance from the gate, to allow for the latter opening toward the operator.
The eyes of the latch bar are preferably constructed of a single piece of metal, having its terminals secured to opposite sides of the latch bar, and bent into an approximately heart-shaped form,the inward ext-ending bend 26 being continued inward, and abutting against the end of the latch bar, to complete the eyes.
It will be seen that the gate is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is positive and reliable in its operation, and that it may be readily opened and closed a distance from it without the necessity of dismounting from a horse or leaving a vehicle. It Will also be seen that the improvements herein shown and described may be conveniently applied to swinging gates of t the ordinary construction.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to, Without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What we claim is 1. The combination of a swinging gate provided with a rearward extending arm, a latch bar pivotally mounted on the'gat'e and extending rearward therefrom and located beneath said arm, uprights located at opposite sides of the gate, and a continuous operating rope or the like extending from one upright to the. other and from each upright to the rearward extending arm of the gate, and loosely connected therewith and depending therefrom and connected with the latch bar and having 2. The combination of a swinging gate provided with a rearward extending arm, oppositely swinging pulleys arranged on the rear end of the arm at the sides thereof, a pivoted latch bar mounted on the gate and extending rearward therefrom and having its projecting portion weighted and terminating beneath said arm and provided with eyes, uprights located at opposite sides of the gate and pro vided with pulleys, a pulley located adjacent to the top of the gate, and a continuous operating rope or the like extending from one upright to the other and arranged on the pulleys thereof, and supported by the pulley at the top of the gate and extending from each upright to the swinging pulleys and depending therefrom, and passing through the eyes of the latch bar and provided with weights, substantially as described.
