UNITED STATES ATnNT Tric@ GEORGE lV. PELTON AND JAMES E. MCELBOY, OF MUSCATNE, IOVA.
APPARATUS FOR HANDLING LlQUlDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,697, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed Moy 16, 1894, Serial No. 511,461. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it 11i/ay concern,.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE XV. PELTON and JAMESE. MOELROY, citizens of the United States, residing at Muscat-ine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Handling Liquids, ot which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in apparatuses for handling liquids.
lThe object of the present invention is to provide simple and effective means for handling liquids, particularly oil, and to enable the same to be readily transferred from a supply tank to a measuring vessel and discharged therefrom into an ordinary vessel witho ut the hands of the operator comingin contact with the oil, thereby'obviatiug the inconvenience in retailing hydro-carbon and other oils.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawing the figure is a side elevation of an apparatus for handling oil embodying the invention.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figure of the drawing.
l designates an oil tank or receptacle designed to be arranged in a cellar 2, or any other desired portion of a store. Leading from it is a su pply tube 4, which may be located beneath or above the floor 5 of a store, and which extends to any desired point and then extends upward through audabove the same and communicates with a transparent measuring vessel 6. The measuring vessel 6,
which is provided with a scale, and which may beconstructed in any desired manner,
is provided with a faucet 7 by means of which the contents of the measuring vessel is discharged into an oil can or the like.
The supply of oil to the measuring vessel is controlled by a cock or valve S of the supply pipe 4.-. The cock or valve is located below the measuring vessel and when sufficient may be ot any desired construction; and a gage l0 indicating the degree of pressure is provided.
It will be seen that the apparatus for handling oil is simple, inexpensive and eihcient; and that oil or any otherliquid may he readily transferred froin a tank or reservoir to a can or other receptacle without the hands ot' the operatorcoming in contact with the liquid.
Changes iu the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Vhat we claim is- In an apparatus for handling liquids, comprising a tank located beneath the floor and arranged adjacent thereto, a supply pipe communicating with the tank adjacent to the bottom thereof, and extending along the bottom ot' the door and upward through it, some dis` tance from the tank, a measuring vessel located above theiioor and com municatiug with the supply pipe and provided with a faucet,
a cock arranged in the supply pipe and 1ocated above the iioor between the same and the measuring vessel, an air pump communieating with the tank at the top thereof and extending through the floor and adapted to beoperated from above the same, and a gage arranged adjacent to the air pump and located above the floor and connected with the tank, substantially as described.
In testimony Vthat we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto afxed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
