SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,694, dated January 1, 1 89 5.

To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JAMES L. NIX, of Homer City, Indiana county, Pennsylvania, have lnade a new and useful Improvement in Broeders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a broeder which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use, and it consists in the novel construction and cornhination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a vertical section of the broeder the section being taken on the line l-l of Fig. 2 which in turn is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, aview of either the front or rear wall of the broeder; and Figs. 4. and 5, respectively an end elevation and a top View of said Wall; Fig. 6, an inside elevation of one of the side walls of the broeder, and Fig. 7 a top view thereof. Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the roof, its two slopes being detached from each other; Fig. 9, a front elevation of the broeder; Fig. 10, a vertical section on the line lO-IO of Fig. 2, and Fig. 1l a vertical section on the line Ill-l1 of Fig. l.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The construction under consideration, generally considered,has four walls, a floor, and a roof.
A represents what maybe termed thefront wall; B, the opposite or rear wall; C, the left hand side wall; D, the right-hand side wall; E, the floor, and F the roof. The walls are detachably united by means of fastenings such as the hooks G and pins g. The hooks are attached, say to the front and rear Walls, and the pins are held in the edges of the adjoining walls, and the relative construction of the walls is such as to permit of the hooks being placed in engagement with the pins, and the walls thereby fastened together.
As the preferred construction in the respect mentioned the front and rear walls, at each end thereof, are each provided with a rabbeted cleat a, and the side walls, at each end thereof, are each provided with a rabbeted cleat c. The cleats, a and c, at each corner of thebrooder, are made to interlt substantially as shown, and there is aslot, c', in each cleat c, to receive the point of the hook G, and the pin g passes through both of the cleats e, c, and when the Walls are thus connected they are tied and braced against lat-eral strains. The walls, toward the lower edge thereof, are each provided with a shoulder, preferably in the form of a cleat b, which, when the walls and door are joined, rests upon the floor and the walls are thereby upheld, and the wall edge, b', below the shoulder cornes sidewise lagainst the edge of the door and the walls are thus kept laterally in place with reference to the door.
The room, II, inclosed by the described door and walls is preferably raised by means of a foundation composed preferably of the walls I which are suitably united. One, I', of the walls is set in as shown to provide ready access to the hot Water heater presently described. The portion, e of the door is preferably made vertically adjustable, substantially as is indicated by the different positions of the floor shown respectively in the full and in the broken lines. In Fig. 10 a convenient mode of carrying out this feature of the improvement is shown.
e', e', e', are removable blocks inserted in the back wall I, of the foundation, and the inner edge of the door e can be dropped to rest upon either of said blocks as desired, or a single set of said blocks may be used which can be inserted in the wall I at the desired height therein. The back wall B is usually a closed one as shown. The front wall A may have Windows such as shown at d', and whichmay be hinged at n.2 to be opened and closed asindicated in Fig. l, and it has a door, a3, which can be swung as indicated in Fig. 2, to open and close the room H when desired.
The roof, F, is made in the form of two sloping parts f, f', which are connected with the walls of the structure as follows: The part f, which is preferably of sheet metal is provided on its under side with purlins f2 and f3. The purlin f2 is arranged near the lower edge of the roof-part f and in conjunction with the cleat f 4 upon the rear wall, forms a groove to receive the upper edge of the rear wall substantially as shown in Fig. l. The roof-part f '--also has purlins f5, f6 and f7. The purlin f5, jointly with the cleat fs upon the front-Wall forms a groove to receive the upper edge of the front wall, and the purlin f, jointly with the purlin f3, occupies a notch, fg, in the rafters flo of the roof.
In applying the roof to the walls the roofpartf is dropped into its place first and then the other roof-partf is dropped into its position, and in so doing the folded fiange j11 upon the part fbecomes interlocked with the ange f12 upon the part f', or substantially as shown in Fig. l. In this manner it will be seen the various parts which form the shell of the structure can be united to form a suitable inclosure for the purpose in question, and when it is desired to ship the structure its roof, Walls and floor, and also the foundation, can be taken apart to be formed into a more compact package.
H represents a curtained inclosure for the chickens to go into. It occupies more or less of the brooding chamber H, and it is warmed directly by means of the coil J which is preferably a part of a hot water heating apparatus whose boiler is shown atj. The preferable means for heating the boiler is a lamp K and the heating apparatus preferably includes a hot air chamber L which rises into the chamber H. The lamp rests in the lower part of said hot air chamber and the heat of the lamp is applied directly to the boiler, which is preferably of the inverted cup-shape shown, and thence the heat rises above the boiler into the upper part of the chamber L and ultimately into the escape ilue Z, which extends upward through the roof F. The chamber L is preferably made lin two parts, va lower part Z', which is attached to the floor E, and an upper part Z2 which is slipped from above onto the lower part Z. The escapeZ preferably extends downward into the chamber L, substantially as shown, and said extension Z2 is, together with the chamber itself, detachable from the escape Z. This enables the parts of the chamber L to be separated from each other. In this manner the heat of the lamp is applied in two Ways to the chamber H, namely: by means of the hot water heating apparatus, and by means of the chamber L. The Water supply in the boiler is maintained by means of the rising pipe j and 'the hopperjz. The coil is connected with the boiler at dierent levels, substantially as shown to provide for the proper circulation of the water through the apparatus.
M represents a ventilation-opening in the wall of the chamber H.
By making the floor of the brooding chamber vertically adjustable substantially as described additional room can be provided from time to time for the chickens as they enlarge in size.

A convenient way of forming the inclosu re I1 is to utilize the coil J as a support for the inclosure-top h, and attach a curtain h to the top h as shown.
I claim- The brooder comprising the closure, the cylinder or chamber consisting of the lower section fixed to, and extending above and below, the floor of the closure and the upper, main section having its lower edge compassing the upper edge of the lower section and having a central pendent tube therein, a combustion outlet pipe forming an extension of said pendent tube, au inverted cup-shaped boiler arranged in the upper part of said lower section and having connected thereto near its lower end, an elbow-pipe, an elevated automatic water-feeding tank, or reservoir with its vertical feed-pipe connecting with said elbow-pipe 0f the boiler, a heating pipe coil having V,connection with the upper part of said boiler and connection with the lower end of said vertical feed-pipe of the water-tank, a curtained compartment or chamber, with its top resting upon said pipe-coil, and a heater below said boiler, substantially as set forth.
