DIE FOR FORMING SHIFTING-RA|LS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 531,636, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed March 6. 1893.
Heretofore in making shifting rails or other articles of manufacture by means of drop forgings, an unnecessary amount of stock has been consumedor wasted by being struck with a hammer and rendering it of-such a condition as to be wholly valueless or else much time must otherwise be consumed in preparing the stock so as to obviate this waste; and to the end of obviating all such difficulty my object is to produce a shifting rail and other articles of hardware, by first preparing the stock from which they are to be swaged so that they may be forged in sets from a minimum amount of stock.
My invention consists in the new and novel dies hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed. They are constructed as foling drawings, in which- Figure 1, shows a piece of stock from which the articles are made. Fig. 2, shows various dies used in the process. Fig. 3, is an end view thereof, showing the depressions in dotted lines. Fig. 4, is; a top view of the stock after it has been swaged in the preparatory die. Fig. 5, is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 6, is a view thereof after it has been swaged in the second mold. Fig. 7, is an edge view thereof, showing the depression therein in dotted lines. Figi'B, is a view of the stock after it has been swagedjin the third and last die. Fig. 9, is an edge view thereof. Fig. 10, is a View of the corner piece for the shifting rail, complete.
For the purpose of carrying out this invention, I first take a piece of stock, substantially as shown in Fig. 1, and swage it in a die a-, which gives it the form shown in Fig. 5. has a raised portion ocentrally of its central rectangular depression, for the purpose of throwing most of the stock into'the edges thereof. -d where it is finally swaged into the form desired. The lower face of the successive hammers is used as a die, corresponding with the dies above referred to. It will be observed that by having the raised portion centrally in the die b-', I am enabled to force the stock to the edges thereof, so'that when it is placed in the last die, thestock will be in the exact location desired to form the L portion of the shifting rail. It will "also be observed that but very little-of the stock will be wasted; and that the articles can thus be made in pairs at a great saving of material.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved means for producing shifting rails, consisting of the die 0., having a central rectangular depression, a die I), having a central rectangular depression, with lateral extensions and a central raised portion central of its rectangular depression, and the die at, having approximately L-shaped depressions with extensionsat opposite points thereof, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of January, 1893.
FRANK M. KINSMAN.
In presence of C. W. SMITH, HOWARD P. DENISON.
I then place it on the die bwhich I then place it onto the die
