My invention has for its object to provide means, whereby the sliding jaw may be engaged, or disengaged at will from the actuating screw; and. also to provide means by which the bar is relieved of the strain brought upon the ferrule when the wrench is in use.

B is the sliding jaw, provided with a recess, or chamber, to receive theactuating screw C. Inserted within .the sliding jaw and pivoted at E is a half-nut E arranged to engage the screw O and beheld'in contact therewith by a spring F attachedv to the sliding jaw with its free end bearing against the half-nut E. The half-nut E iills the recess made in the sliding jaw so that any end thrust will be received by the walls G, G. The free end of thenut E is preferably made with a projecting point H forming a surface I upon the end adapted to receive the thumb and allow the nut to be swung upon the pivot E', against the tension of the spring F, far enough to disengage the screw C and allow the sliding jaw to be moved up and down the bar A, by the pressure of the nut E against the walls G, G of the sliding jaw. As soon as the nut E is released, the action of the spring F serves to carry the nut into engagementwith the screw C, allowing the adjustment of the sliding jaw by the action of the screw. y
I am aware that half-nuts, pivoted upon the sliding jaw and arranged to engage the actuating screw, are not new; but by hanging the half-nut upon a pivot and arranged to swing in a horizontal kplane between the retaining walls G, G I relieve the pivotal connection of all strain and arrange the nut in a position for the convenient manipulation of the sliding jaw.
`J denotes the ferrule, inclosing the bar A, which is screw-threaded at A2`to receive the screw Vthreaded end of a metallic sleeve K, whose upper end rests against a shoulder J on the ferrule J. The metallic sleeve K incloses the bar A and extends downward with its lower end bearing againstthe upper surfaces ofthe tip nut L. Any downward strain upon the ferrule J is therefore received by the tip nutL and by screwing the tip nut against the lower end of the sleeve K, which is held from upward movement along the bar by the screw threaded section'L A2, the tip nut acts conjointly with the sleeve K to produce a strain upon the screw threaded sections of the bar A, the tip nut L becoming a check nut.
The Wood handle N is held between the tip nut L and the ferrule J in the usual manner, but is relieved from all strain as the distance between the end of the ferrule and the tip nut can never be shortened by the downward movement of the ferrule.,
I am aware that the bar` of a wrench has been made screw threaded beneath the ferruleto receive a collar, which would prevent the longitudinal movement of the ferrule and I do not claim such.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' 1. The combination with the actuating screw of a wrench and a sliding jaw recessed to receive said actuating screw and provided with the opposing walls G,G in parallel planes at right angles with the axis of said actuating screw, of ahalf nut pivoted to said sliding jaw at E and held between the walls G, G, and a spring F attached to said sliding jaw and applied to hold said pivoted half nut in contact with said screw, substantially as de'- scribed.
2. In combination with the screw C and sliding jaw B recessed. to receive said screw roo and provided with tbe opposing walls G, G at right angles with the axis of said screw, n half nut E held between said Walls and pivoted at E upon one side of said sliding jaw and in front of the rear side of the screw C, a. spring F attached to the sliding jaw and applied to hold the half nut in contact with said screw, and a proj eating point II upon the free end of said half nut, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the bar A, ferrule J and tip nut L, said bar being provided with a. screw threaded section A2, of a. sleeve K provided with nn internal screw thread and screwed upon the section A2 with its upper 15 end abutting against seid ferrule and its lower end bearing upon said tip nut, substantially as described.
