To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBION PARIS WEEKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Oruz'and State of California, have invented a new and useful Cinch-Plate, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in cinch plates. I

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of cinch plates for.

' riding and pack saddles, and to provide a simple and inexpensive one which will pre- Vent chafing a horse or other animal and the resulting evils.

A furtherobject of the invention is to provide a cinch plate, which will readily adjust itself and yie (1 without rubbingahorse, irritating or injuring it.

' The invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended. In the drawings:'Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cinch plate constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a saddle. Fig. 2 is a side'elevation showing a double arrangement of cinch plates. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the cinch plate. I

. being substantially rectangular in form and having its upper corners rounded. The base plate 1 forms a guard or shield to prevent the ends of a girth 2, ,or saddle straps 3, from chafing or otherwise injuring an animal at the points of attachment or connection, and thereby avoid the evils resulting from such inconvenience and torture to the animal. The saddle straps 3'are connected with the upper corners of the base plate by ears 4, which are provided with strap openings or slots 5 and which are pivoted to the base plate by rivets 6, or other suitable fastening devices. The ears are preferably constructed of sheet metal and have segmental inner portions and lie flat against the exterior face of the base plate and they are provided beyond the latter with,

The base plate extends beyond the hinged rectangular loop or frame to shield the strap, and the opening 7, may be arranged horizontally to enable the strap or girth to bepassed through itand secured to the body portion of the girth by stitching or the like; or the slot 7, may ex tend vertically through the loop or frame and have the end of the girth secured in it by rivets 10, or other fastening devices.

it may be arranged in connection with another cinch plate; and it will be readily apparent that the pivoted ears will adjust themselves to suit the positions of the saddle straps. It will be seen that the cinch plate is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is automatically adjustable and that it is capable of subserving effectively the purposes of it without inconvenience to an animal.

. Changes in the form,'proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What is claimed is V 1. The combination of a saddle having downwardly converging saddle strap's provided at their lower ends with metal ears, a girth, a base plate arranged beneath said ears and having them pivoted to it at its top, and the hingedly mountedgirth fastening receiving the girth and carried by the plate and located below said ears, substantially as described.
