SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,569, dated December 25,1894.

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ennis, in the county of Ellis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Breast-Strap for Harness, of which the following is a speci fication. I

My invention relates to improvements in harness; and has special reference to that part thereof termed the breast-strap.

The objects of the invention are to produce a breast-strap so constructed as to obviate pressure on the windpipe of the horse and to transfer such pressure to the shoulders; to obviate chafing or rubbing of the breast-strap upon the shoulders, and to permit them to move freely in advance of each other as a result of the movements of the horse. a

With these and other objects of the invention in view the same consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings:'Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a breast. strap embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse sectional view through the breaststrap and its connection with the arch.

The breast-strap 1, is constructed in a single piece, that is, is capable of extending entirely across and t0 the opposite sides of the animal. At points at each side of its center, the strap isprovided at'its inner side with pads 2 designed to bear against the shoulders of the horse. Opposite these pads and to the exterior of the breast strap leatherloops 3, are provided and each leather loop is connected to the perforated end 4 of a U-shaped arch 5, by-means of a pin or pintle '6 passing downwardly through the leather loop and the eyes or perforations of the arch.

lying between the ends of the arch takes within the arch thus forming a loop7 which, when the strap is in position, holds aloof from the'wind-pipe of the animal and avoids any shortness of breath that might otherwise oc cur as' a result of pressure by the breast-strap. It will furthermore be seen that by reason of the surplus of material at this point there is a loose movement, hinge-like in its nature between the arch and strap, and that, inasmuch as the strap and arch are connected in ,the manner shown, no reciprocation or transverse movement of the strap against the breast of the animal can take place.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, a breast-collar comprising a continuous strap, arched in front toextend around and fit the horses neck and provided with pads on its inner side in rear of the arched portion, loops or'clips on the exterior surface of the strap adjacent to the front ends of the pads, and an arched metal tree with vertical holes through its ends, and lying immediately adjacent to the strap and connected by vertical pivots with the loops or clips, substantially as dedescribed.
