REGULATOR FOR OPEN TANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,482, dated December 25, 1894.
Application filed April 23,1 394.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulators for Open Tan ks,
of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates to automatic means for regulating the filling of open water tanks used in supplying water to steam boilers, and consists in the new construction and combination of devices for the purpose substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tank and a feed pump having my improved regulator attached showing the method of constructing and applying myinvention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of the regulator.

D is the tank supply regulatorw connected in the discharge pipe from the aforesaid feed pump, and is the subject of this present ap plication, and it consists in the adaptation of the said governor with means foroperating the same, by the rise and fall of water in the tank, in such a manner that the height or quantity of water is constantly maintained, without waste or loss, and without attention from an operator.
" D is a frame like the frame D of the governor, one end of which is connected with the valve E located in the discharge pipe F leading from the pump, the frame being suspended in a perpendicular position.

H is a piston in said cylinder having a rod extending toward the valve E and is coupled to the valve stem in the same manner as in the governor, and S is a'spring on the piston rod bearing against the piston and a crossbar Serial No. 5138.629. (No model.)
I, on the said piston rod, held by rods attached in theframe. This is the same con struction as the governor, and is an adaptation of the governor for this purpose. 7 The cylinder G is connected by a pipe, J, with the water pipe F for the purpose of providing an equal pressure on the piston and the valve, thus making it a balanced valve.
7 The means for operating the regulator is as follows:
K is a small tank orvessel suspended by a cord or rod L to the outer end of a lever M, fulcrumed'to an arm m on the frame'D; The short arm of said lever M is connected with the coupling nut on the valve stem and piston rod, and the tank is counterbalanced by the spring S. Inthe bottom of the small tank K is provided a pipe N, to the elbow of which is attached a flexible pipe or hose 0, connecting said small tank with the large tank A, below the waterlevel. The purpose of this connection is to provide for conveying water from the main tank to small one, and the position of the small one must be such that its middle'part shall beon the same level with the water level in the large tank. The object of this is, that whenever the water in the large tank falls below the required level, there will be asimilar fall in the small tank. This would diminish the quantity of Water and reduce the weight of the small tank in proportion to such reduction, and thereby enable the spring S to lift said tank and open the valve E to allowfor replenishing the large tank. Now when the required level of water is again reached in the large tank, there is a like replenishing of water in the small tank, and its weight is again increased so as to overcomethe power of the spring S and the valve E is again closed, and the pump will also cease to operate. The pump governor controls the supply of steam to the steam cylinder of the pump, which Works in conjunc: tion with the regulator.
P is a pipe connected with the tank A by which water is drawn from said tank to supply boilers or other purposes.
Having described my invention, I claim as follows: I
In a regulator'for open tanks thecombination with water pipe F, of the regulator constem and piston rod; and means substantially 10 as described for operating said lever M, for actuating the valve E, as and for the purpose set forth.
