Be it known that LRICHARD H. RYAN, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to what are generally known as pen and pencil cases, and consists in a novel construction of the same, as herein- It has long been desired by dealers and manufacturers in this class of goods, which are usually made up in gold or silver, to provide the pencil case with a rubber eraser, but so far as I am aware, no one prior to my invention has succeeded in combining the eraser with a pencil movement.

In carrying out my invention the main body, shell, or case of the pencil is left open at one end to receive the eraser, while the opposite end carries a spirally slotted tube forming a part of the movement. Fitting within the spirally slotted tube is a longitudi. nally slotted tube, through which and the spirally slotted tube, a pin carried by the pens cil projects. A sleeve or tube is connected at .one end to the outer end of the longitudinally-slotted tube, land is journaled at its inner end upon the shell or case, so that by holding the shell or casel and' turning the sleeve or tube, or vice versa, the pencil will be carried into or out ofthe end of the sleeve or tube. As the pencil is carried inward, its inner end is permitted to project into the main body or shell, thus allowing me to ein# `ploy a long pencil in connection with a very short movement, whereby I am enabled to use long leads in the pencil and at thesame time have an extendedV bearing for the pencil to insure steadiness and rigidity.

The eraser is designed to be moved into and out of the main body or shell as desired, Without altecting the position of the pencil; and to secure this result, the 'eraser holder is provided with a pin which passes through a longitudinal slot in the body or shell, and is con` nected with a sleeve or band which encircles the body or shell. concealed at all times, thereby excluding the dust or dirt from the pencil movement. Other means may be employed for moving the eraser into and out of the main body or shell.

Referring now to the drawings, which represent thesimplest and preferred embodiment of my invention-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device ready for insertion in the pocket; Fig. 2, a similar view with the eraserprojected; Fig. 3, aside elevation partly in section; 'and Fig. 4, alongitudinal sectional view on a larger scale. i

A indicates the main body, shell, or case, from one end of which projects the spirallyslotted tube B, Fig. 4. At a short distance from one end of the case is a circumferential rim or'ilange a; while at the opposite end is an ornamental band or ring b, as shown in all the igures. The spirally-slotted tube B is of less diameter than the shell or case A, and is secured at its inner end to a collare which is fast to thecase. Within the tube B is a tube O slotted longitudinally to receive a pin d carried by the pencil or .pencil holder D, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and as is common in this class of devices, the construction and arrangement being such that by holding one of the tubes and turning the other, the pencil will be carried inward or outward, according to the direction of rotation.

Secured to the end of tube C is a collar e, Figs. 3 and 4, against which the outer end of tube B abuts, and to which the outer end of the sleeve or tube E is secured by soldering or otherwise; the said sleeve E encircling at its opposite end the inner end of theshell or case A and abutting against the rim or flange a.'

The shell or case A is provided with a straight slot f to receive a pin g carried by the eraser holder F, Figs. 3 and 4, which latter will consist simply of a short tube which shall t'snugly within the case A, and by which the eraser proper G, is carried.

Encircling the case or shell A is a tube or sleeve H to which the pin g is secured, the4 length of the sleeve exceeding that of the slot so that when the said sleeve is moved lengthwise upon the case A, between the rim or flange a and the ring b, the slot shall remain concealed or covered by the sleeve.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the eraser may be projected from the case independently of the pencil, asin Fig. 2; that the pencil may be projected independently of the eraser as in Fig. 3; and that they may be pro-V j ected or retracted simultaneously.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In acombined pencil and eraser, the combination with shell or tube A provided with spirally slotted tube B; of the straight slotted tube C Within tube B; the pencilD provided with pin d to engage the slotted tubes B C; the sleeve E journaled upon the end of the shell A and connected with tube C; the eraser holder F provided With pin g to enter a slot in the shell A; and the encircling sleeve II connected with the piu g, said parts being adapted to co-operate substantially shown and described.

2. In a combined pencil and eraser, the combinatiou with shell A provided at one end with spirally-slotted tube B, and the rim a and ring b; of a longitudinally-slotted tube C litting freely Within tube B; a pencil D provided with a pin to engage the slotted tubes; an eraser mounted Within the shell A; a sliding sleeve II encircling the tube between the rim a and ring b, and connected with the eraser by a pin; and a rotatable sleeve E journaled at one end upon the shell and connected at the 3o opposite end With the tubeC, said parts being arranged to cooperate substantially as shown and described.

In combination with shell A provided with collar c; the tube B secured to the collar and projecting beyond the end ofthe shell; the tube C Within tube B; the collar e at the outer end of tube C; the pencil D provided with piu cl to engage the slotted tubes B C; and the sleeve E journaled upon the end of 4o the case A and connected at its opposite end to the collar e.

4. In combination with a pencil case provided with a pencil movement aud a pencil at one end; a hollow eraser-holder within the case at the opposite end and means for moving said holder longitudinally, whereby the pencil may be retracted into that portion of the case in which the eraser holder is mounted.
