B e it known that I, SIMEON J. Hicks, of Englewood, in the county of Oook and State of Illinois,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Confectionery-Machines, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y
lThe object of the invention is to provide a new and improved confectionery machine, which is simple and durable in construction,
very effective in operation, and more especi'ally designed for cutting buttercups and similar forms from a drawn and liattened piece of candy orvother substance.
The invention consists principally of 'a hinged stripper plate adapted to support the pieces cut by the knives.
The invention further consists of a hinged stripper plate adapted to pass over the lower knives, a pivoted frame carrying the upper knives, and catches held in the said frame and adapted to engage the said stripper plate, to swing the same upward to move the candy pieces from between the lower knives, and to drop the same at the rear of the machine.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improve` ment. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of part of the improvement on the line 3-3 0f Fig. 2.
The improved machine is provided with a suitably constructed table A, on which is arranged the longitudinally extending knife plate B, carrying the transversely arranged knives D, projecting through a stripper plate C hinged at O tothe rear edge of the knife plate B, as is plainly shown in Fig. A3. A spring C2 secured to the table A presses on the rear projecting end of .the said stripper plate C, so as to hold the same normally in position on top of the knife plate B, as is plainly shown in said Fig. 3.
Directly opposite the stationary knives D are arranged the knives E, secured on the under side of a movable knife frame F provided with rearwardly extending arms F', pivoted at F2 to brackets secured to the table A. The sides of the arms F are pivotally connected with downwardly extending arms G connected `with each othery by a transverse rod H fitted to slide in slotted standards or hangers I, secured to the under side of the table A.
. The rod H is connected by an adjustable link J with a treadle K under the control of the operators foot and fulcrumed at K to a bracket supported in the iioor or other con- Yenient place. On the treadle K pulls a spring L, secured to the under side of the table A, so as to hold the said treadle K normally in an uppermost position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, whereby the knife framepF, with its-knives E, is likewise held in an uppermost position. Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
On the ends of the .knife frame F are held spring catches N, extending downward and adapted to engage the projecting ends of the stripper plate C, so as to impart an upward swinging motion to the same at the time the operator releases the treadle K and the spring L pulls the latter upward to move the knife frame F in" the same direction.
The operation is as follows: When the operator releases the treadle K, then the knife frame F stands in an uppermost position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to permit the operator t0 place the drawn and flattened piece of candy or other material on the stationary knives D, projecting above the stripper plate O. The operator then presses with his foot on the treadle K, to swing the same downward and to force the knife frame F to swing downward so that the knives E, in conjunction with the lower set of knives D, cut the candy into pieces resting between the knives D on the stripper plate O. The operator then releases the pressure on the treadle K, so that the spring L pulls the treadle upward, whereby the knife frame F is caused to swing upward and rearward to move the knives E out of contact with the cut pieces of candy. The frame F, in its upward movement, finally causes the catches N to engage the projecting ends of the stripper plate C so as to impart an upward swinging motion to loo the said stripper plate, whereby the candy pieces are carried along by the stripper plate and moved out from between the knives D. When the stripper plate C is moved into an inclined position and is free from the knives, then the pieces of candy carried by the stripper plate slide rearward off the same, or are pushed from the plate by the operator, and at this time the catches N, in moving upward with the frame F, disengage the said stripper `plate, so that the latter swings downward, back to its normal position by the action of its spring C2.
The above described operation is then re peated; that is, the operator places a new piece of drawn candy over the projecting fixed knives D, and then presses the treadle K to cause the frame F to swing downward and cut the candy, after which the operator releases the treadle to permit the frameF to swing back in an upward direction and to move the stripper plate upward by the catches N, to disengage the pieces of candy from the knives D, and to permit the same to slide over the stripper plate onto the rear cf the table.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A confectionery machine provided with a hinged stripper plate adapted to support the pieces cnt by the knives, substantially as shown and described.
2. A confectionery machine provided with a set of fixed knives, a set of movable knives, and ahin ged stripper plate engaging the said fixed knives to support the candy cut by the knives, substantially as shown and described.
3. A confectionery machine provided with a set of fixed knives, a set of movable knives, a hinged stripper plate engaging the said fixed knives to support the candy cut by theknives, and means, substantially as shown and described, for operating the said stripper plate from the frame carrying the movable knives, substantially as shown and described.
4. A confectionery machine, comprising a fixed knife plate carrying knives, a hinged knife frame carrying knives operating in conjunction with the said fixed knives, and a stripper plate hinged on the fixed knife plate 5o and formed with slots for the passage of the fixed knives, substantially as shown and described.
5. A confectionery machine, comprising a fixed knife plate carrying knives, a hinged knife frame carrying knives operating in conjunction with the said fixed knives, a stripper plate hinged on the fixed knife plate and formed with slots for the passage of the fixed knives, and a spring for holding the said stripper plate in a normal position over the said fixed knife plate, as set forth.
6. A confectionery machine, comprising a fixed knife plate carrying knives, a hinged knife frame carrying knives operating in ccnjunction with the said fixed knives, a stripper plate hinged on the fixed knife plate and formed withslots for thepassage of the fixed knives, and catches held on the said hinged knife frame and adapted to engage the said stripper plate to impart an upward swinging motion to the same to move the candy out from between the fixed knives, substantially as shown and described.
7. A` confectionery machine, comprising a fixed knife plate carrying knives, a hinged knife frame carrying knives operating in conjunction with the saidfixed knives, a stripper' plate hinged on the fixed knife plate and formed with slots for the passage ot' the fixed knives, and a treadle mechanism connected with the said hinged knife frame to actuate the latter, substantially as shown and described.
8. A confectionery machine, comprising a fixed knife plate carrying knives, a hinged knife frame carrying knives operating in conjunctionwith the said fixed knives, a` stripper plate hinged on the fixed knife plate and formed with slots for the passage of the fixed knives, a treadle mechanism connected with the said hinged knife frame to actuate the latter, and a spring pulling cnthe said treadle mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
