- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,858, dated December 11, 1894.-

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatL'WILLIAM J. SHoRTILL,
of Ballinafad, in the county of Halton and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin' Oradles; and I hereby declare that the following description is sufi'iciently full, clear, and exact as to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a means whereby a cradle can be automatically rocked for any predetermined space of time, and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efiective contrivance to accomplish this purpose.
The invention is hereinafter more fully set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claim. 2
In the drawingsz Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cradle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the rocking device. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the cradle guiding device.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
Connected to and supported on the base B are two standards AA'. The standards A- A respectively are located at the opposite ends of the said base B and converge at their upper end. The upper ends of the standards AA' are held by a cap a.
Mounted on the top of the base B are two standards A- similar in all respects to the standards AA, and held at their upper end S by a cap a. The standards A-A and A" A' may be of any height, and may be constructed of any'suitable material. Theupper ends of the two sets of standards are connected together by a brace or stay D'of snfficient strength to give rigidity to the upper end of the structure. Extending outwardly at substantially a right angle to the lower end of the standard A is a brace b, which extends a little beyond the middle of the cradle, and extending downwardly from the lower end of the standard A is a similar leg 17', which extends slightly beyond the middle of the cradle and meets'the brace b. The braces 12-12 are riveted together and form a stay to assist in bracing the lower part of the structure. Extending from the lower end of the standards A -A" are similar braces respectively b-b"' which are also riveted together. Mounted respectively on these stays are curved guide bars 0-0. The guide bars 0-0 are provided with upwardly extending lugs under side of the cradle F are a series of lugs f "-f respectively, to engage respectively with the guides cc to prevent the cradle F swinging too far when operated by the rocking mechanism.
Surrounding the top of the cradle F is a V netting G, which will prevent the occupant of the cradle falling or climbing out, and also prevents anyone outside of the cradle injuring the occupant by striking at it with sticks or other missiles. The rocking mechanism consists of a drum J pivoted between the standards AA, and operated by a spring K. The side face of the drum J is provided with a gear wheel L, which meshes with the pinion M of the escapement wheel N, also pivoted between the standards A-A'. The pallet O is also pivoted between the standards A-A and engages with the teet'hof the escapement wheel N. The arm P of the pallet O is hookshaped and works in the lower forked end of the pendulum Q, also pivoted between the standards AA'. The upper forked end of the pendulum Q engages with a horizontal pin R connected to the adjacent arm of the swinging framef. The pin R is provided with a guide S which works on a horizontal pin T connected to the pendulum Q.
It might here be stated that the several parts of the rocking mechanism are connected to a plate U secured to the standards A-A'.
In the operation of the device the spring K is tightly wound and the unwinding of this spring causes the revolution of the drum J and gear wheel L, and this gear wheel L meshing with the pinion wheel M and the escapement wheel N causes the revolution of the said escapement wheel which operates the pallet O and pendulum Q, and the movement of the pendulum Q in turn causes the rocking movement of the swinging frame f.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the cradle, the standards located at either end of the cradle, the cross bar connecting together the upper ends of the standards, the stays connecting together the lower ends of the standards, the guide bars mounted on the said stays, the swinging frame connected to the cross bar and carrying the cradle, the lugs connected to the under side of the cradle and engaging with the cross bars and the rocking mechanism consisting of a spring operated drum having a Ballinafad, June 27, 1894:.
