To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, BLAN BALLARD HAY- DON, residing at New Castle, in the county of Henry and State of Kentucky, have invented. a new and Improved Car-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an automatic car coupler of a simple construction, which can be uncoupled from either the top or side of the car, and which will be posi-y tive in its operation. j
My invention consists in such novel features of construction and peculiar combination of parts hereinafter first described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in wh-ich- .i

In its practical construction the draw bar A is supported on the carv frame in the usual manner, and has its head A formed. with a mouth having beveled side and bottom edges as shown.
Referring now more'particularly to Fig. 2, it will be noticed, the link mortise or cham ber B, has a depression B in the bottom which terminates at the vertical shoulder c of the lower frontend C of the head, which shoulder forms a link lock member, asI hereinafter specitied. Within the recess or depression B is held a yielding supplemental bottom member, which is in the nature of ahorizontally pivoted jaw D, pivoted at its rear end on a bolt d, the front end of which is normally held ush with the upper face c of the end C, by means of aspring or cushion member E, held under such end.

The rear end of the jaw F is pivoted on the boltfx, while its front end is normally forced downward by a spring G held under the top'ot` the draw-head Y and against the jaw F as shown such spring G being stronger than the spring underthe lower jaw whereby its tension will overcome the tension of such lower spring when the coupling `.link isheld between the jaws for a purpose presently explained. j l l H indicates the coupling link, the construction ofwhich is most clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, by reference to which it will be noticed, the same comprises two sections hx formed with hinge eyes h, on their upper rear ends, which are joined by the hinge bolt h', whereby a hinged connection which allows the sections h to swing upward, is provided. The front end of each section h3 has a coupling barb having opposite coupling shoulders h3.
So far as described it will be readily seen that normally the sections hx of the link will be held horizontally thereby holding the outer end always in position for coupling.
Now assuming that the draw head having the link member is approaching the opposite draw-head, the front section hx as it engages the face of the opposite draw-head will rise and travel up the beveled face of the end C and be forced in between the jaws D and F, and as its shoulders h3 pass the shonldersf and c the upper jaw, owing to the increased pressure of its spring will force the lower shoulder on the end h3 down back of the shoulder c while the upper shoulder will engage the shoulder f J indicates a vertically disposed rock shaft journ'aled in the draw-head at one side, it passing through slots @ZX f X inthe clamp members D and F, and such shaft J has a crank or bail portion J which is titted to project between the members D and.. F as most clearly shown in Fig. 7. At the point where the bail projects the said member F has a rearwardly beveled portion FX inclined and so arranged that when the shaft is turned parallel with the side wall of the draw-head, the clamp members will be held free to move to theircoupled positions. When however such shaft J is turned at right angles as shown in Fig. 7 the 'Ico jaw F will be spread apart from the lower jaw, which, owing to its yielding condition will immediately move Ithe barb end of the link flush with the member C and place it in position for withdrawal. The link members have slots in their ends so that they can be readily coupled with the ordinary link and pin couplings.
In practice the shaft .I is connected with operatin g mechanism extended to the top and y sides of the car whereby it can be set to the uncoupling position from either the side or the top.
In Fig. 8 Ihaveillustrated a modified form of link, in whlch the hinged coupling members are capable of being swung up in reverse directions and are forced to their downward or normal pressure by a dat spring held secured on the central or body portion by a staple member as shown, such construction adapting the link to readily couple with drawheads of different heights.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with the draw-head havinga transverse coupling shoulder at the front end of the bottom of the mortise, and a yielding member held in such bottom with its front end normally tlush with top of the said front end of the said mortise bottom, of a coupling jaw held in the top of the mortise pivoted at its rear end, and having its front end spring pressed toward the bottom of the mortise, its front end having a transverse eouplin g flan ge on its under face, the link having its ends beveled and formed with transverse coupling shoulders, and means for uncoupling, all arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
2. In a car coupling the combination with the draw-head A having a coupling shoulder c and a recess C in the bottom, and a yield ing member I) in the said recess, of the pivoted coupling jaw F having a coupling flange f disposed above the shoulder c, a spring for forcing the front end of such jaw downward, said spring having a pressure greater than the-yielding pressure of the member D, the link II provided with transverse coupling shoulders and means for uncoupling all arranged substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the draw-headA vprovided with a yielding member in the bottom of its mortise, and a coupling shoulders at the front endof such bottom, andthe coupling jaw F pivoted at its rear end in the mortise, a spring for forcing the front end downward said end having a coupling ilange f said jaw having an inclined recessed portion at one side, ofthe uncoupling shaft J, journaled vertically in the draw-head having awinged portion adapted to be swung into engagement with the said inclined recess of the jaw F, and thereby force it upward against its spring tension and means for operating the shaft from the top or sides ot the car all arranged substantially as shown and described.
