ATENT OARL C. MORITZ AND STEPHEN D. GREENWOOD, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,788, dated December 11, 1894..
Application filed April 3, 1894:.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CARL O. Monrrz and STEPHEN D. GREENWOOD, of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Pocket-Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in. pocket knives; and the object of our invention is to produce a knife and particularly a pocket knife, which is of very simple construction, costing but little if any more than an ordinary knife, and which is constructed in such a manner that it may be easily separated longitudinally when desired so that the blades, the partition plates and springs may be easily removed and new parts substituted in case any of the old ones have become broken.
A further objectof our invention is to construct and arrange the parts in such a way that they will be held together firmly under ordinary circumstances and that the knife will externally present the usual appearance.
To these ends our invention-consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the knife showing the removable section of the handle. Fig. 2 is an elevation with one side of the handle removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, showing the inside of the removable section in elevation. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and. Fig. 5 is an inside elevation of a part of the handle with I the blades separated from the handle rivets.
The handle comprises two opposite side pieces 10 and 11 which externally are similar in appearance and which have the usual lin-- ing plates 12 and 13. The removable side piece 10 of the handle has at the ends, behind the lining plate, recesses 14 while a similar central recess 15 is made in the side piece, these recesses being adapted to receive the end and middle rivets 16 which fire secured to the side piece 11 of the handle and are Serial No. 506 ,189- tNo model.)
adapted to project through the several blades, partition plates and spring, as described pres ently, and are also adapted to enter holes in the lining plate of the side piece 10. The rivets 16 have notches 17 made transversely in them 5 5 to enable them to engage the lining plate and locking latch, as described below. The rivets are adapted to extend through the usual holes 18 in the shanks of the blades 19, through the holes in the partition plates 20 which are of the usual kind, and through the central hole in the spring 21 which is also of ordinary construction. The end rivets 16 are adapted to enter holes 22 in the plate 12 of the side piece 10 and project into the recesses 6 5 14, and on one side of these holes are slots 23 which are adapted to receive the reduced portion 17 of the rivets, and when the side piece is placed on the rivets and then pushed slightly endwise, the reduced or notched por- 7o tions 17 of the rivets enter these slots and thus lock the handle in place so that it cannot move laterally. I
The central rivet 16 enters a slot 24 in the plate 12 opposite the recess 15, and the notch 7 of this rivet is adapted to engage a latch 25 which turns in the recess 15 and which is secured to a screw 26 having its head countersunk in the outside of the side piece 10 and threaded into the plate 12, so that by giving this screw a quarter turn the-latch 25 may be made to engage the notch 17 of the central rivet and thus prevent the side piece from movingeither longitudinally or laterally.
It will be observed that the exterior ofthe knife will look just likeany knife except that the head of the screw 26 will show slightly. It will be understood that this handle may be used in connection with knives of any design and of any desired number of blades.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Aknifehandle comprising the sidepieces, one of which is provided with the rivets for 5 the blade and backspring, the outer ends of the end rivets being notched or headed and the other side piece having key-hole slots formed in its inner faces to receive and lock on said notched or headed ends of the end 100 rivets, and means for preventing longitudinal movement of the slotted side piece, substantially as described.
2. A pocket knife comprising the two side pieces one of which has notched end and middle rivets, and the other side plate having end key-hole slots to lock on said notch ends of the end rivets,'and an opening to receive the middle rivet, a latch to engage the middle rivet, a partition having apertures for the rivets, aback spring apertured for the middle rivet and blades on the end pivots, substantially as described.
3. Theknifehandle, comprisingaside piece having projecting notched rivets, a side piece having a perforated lining plate to receive the rivets and slots to engage the notches of the rivets, and a fastening device to prevent the endwise movement of the removable side piece, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the side piece and the notched rivets fixed thereto, of the second side piece having a perforated and slotted lining plate to engage the rivets, and a latch held behind the lining plate and adapted to engage a notch of one of the rivets, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the side piece and the notched rivets fixed thereto, of the second side piece having perforations and slots in its inner side to engage the rivets, a screw held to turn in the second side piece, and a latch carried by the screw to engage a notch of one of the rivets, substantially as described.
