' R. B. VAN DYKB.
- SPRINKLER.
vNo,530,464. Patentednc.41s94.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ROBERT B. VAN DYKE, OF IANDERSOI,4 INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ALFRED R. BONE, OF SAME PLACE. l
SPRINKLER;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,464, dated December 4, 1,894.
Application filed October 9, 1893. Serial No. 487,659. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, ROBERT B. VAN DYKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a device for sprinkxo ling grass, flowers, and the like, and the object of my invention is to provide a sprinkler having a stationary tubular portion adapted for connection with a suitable water-supply, and a nozzle, or spraying device, connected I5 therewith by means of a comparatively short section of tiexibleitubing, whereby the pressure of the Waterin passing through the iiexible tube will cause said tube, and with it the nozzle, to vibrate, more or less rapidly, in an 2o eccentric and irregular manner, thus producing a novel and pleasing effect and insuring a thorough sprinkling of the surrounding grass.
A further object of my invention is to pro.- vide a sprinkler having a stationary tubular portion adapted for connection with a suitable water-su ppl y, and a spraying device connected thereto by means ot' a flexible tube of less diameter than said stationary portion. 3o A further object is to provide a suitable coupling between the stationary and tiexible tubes.
In the drawingsz--Figure l is a View ofmy improved" sprinkler attached to a Water-plug, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the stationary portion.
A indicates the stationary portion, comprising a lower section, B, of hose-pipe of the ordinary construction, having atits free end 4o the usual screw-cap, b, for attaching it to a water-plug, and an upper section, B', of metal, having an enlarged portion, b', internally screw threaded, and a reduced portion, b2. The tube B is connected with the tube, B,
4 5 by means ot' an externally threaded tube, b3, which screws into the lower and upper ends of each, respectively.
C indicates a fiexible tube, which is otless diameter than the tube, B, and which at one 5o end is connected with the upper reduced end of the tube, B', and at its other is provided with a spraying device, D, which may be of any well-known construction, although the form shown in the drawings has been found to be desirable.
In practice, the tube C may be from a foot to a foot-and-a-halt' in length and aboutonehalf an inch in diameter, my entire device being about two and one-half feet long; but these dimensions may be changed, and the 6o tube made shorter and smaller or longer and larger, according as the pressure of the Water is small or great.
In operation, the device is attached to an ordinary garden-hose plug, and the water turned on. The pipe, O, being comparatively small, offers great resistance to the passage through it of the water, and being very flexible, it is thereby caused to vibrate or wriggle inan eccentric` and irregular manner, throw- 7o ing the water in all directions.
While I have shown and claimed the stationary portion of my device as being made in two parts, it is evident that it could be formed in one piece, and such modiation is within the spirit of myinvention.
My device is also not limited in operation to sprinkling grass, but may be used in connection with a fountain.
VHaving thus described my invention, what 8o I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sprinkler comprising a lower resilient section, a screw-th readedcoupling secured to the lower end thereof, and exteriorly threaded tube secured at its lower end in the upper end of said resilient section, an upper rigid section of smaller diameter than said lower section having a lower enlarged end, which latterisprovidedwithaninteriorscreW-thread 9o for engagement with the upper projecting end of said externally threaded tube, a flexible tube secured to the upper end of said rigid' section, and a nozzle on the free end of said flexible tube, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereto aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
