PATENT TRIPOD-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530, 443, dated December 4, 1894.
Application filed June 29,1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT G. MoDowELL, of Ishpeming. in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Tripod-Leg, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to tripods such as are used for rock drills and similar machines, and its object is to provide a new and improved tripod leg which is comparatively simple and durable in construction,and permits a convenient adjustment of the point in the sleeve attached to the tubular leg.
The invention consists in certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front'elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same, on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a like view of the same on the line 4:-4: of Fig. 2.
The improved tripod leg is provided with theusual point A, adapted to pass into a longitudinally extending bore B in a sleeve B, formed in its head B with a larger bore B adapted to receive the reduced end 0' formed on the lower end of the tubular leg 0. The reduced end C is locked to the head B of the sleeve B by a pin D, driven through registering apertures in the reduced end and the head, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 2. The holes bored in the head 13 and the reduced end 0', preferably extend clear through, so that when the point A is removed from the tubular leg the said pin D can be readily driven out by the insertion of a punch or other suitable tool, to disconnect the tubular leg from the sleeve B.
In the foot B of the sleeve 13 is formed a key-way B extending into part of the bore B and adapted to receive a key E, having to prevent the said key Serial No. 516,102- (No model.)
from becoming accidentally displaced or lost from the sleeve as long as the point A passes through the bore B. In order to insert this key E into the key-way B it is necessary'that the point A-be removed, and after the key is in place the point is inserted and the inner edge of the said key fits snugly upon the exterior surface of the point A, and when the key is driven home it securely fastens the point to the sleeve. A suitable recess or cutout portion is formed in one side of the sleeve B, between the head B and the foot B to permit of conveniently striking the head E of the key E whenever it is desired to disconnect the point A from the sleeve B.
It will be seen that by the arrangement described, the point A and tubular leg 0 are conveniently connected with each other, and the point can be fastened quickly in the sleeve to adjust the leg to the desired length by moving the point A inward or outward in the sleeve.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a tripod, the tubular leg, an open ended sleeve having its bore at its upper end enlarged to receive thelower end of the tubular leg, means for connecting the two, a longitudinally extending keyway in one side of the lower end of the sleeve and opening into the bore thereof, and a key mounted in said key-way and having headed ends to prevent disconnection from the sleeve, substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
2. A tripod leg, comprising a sleeve formed with a longitudinal bore and having a head with an enlarged bore and a foot with a keyway opening into the longitudinal bore, a tubular leg having a reduced end fitted into the enlarged bore of the head, a pin for connecting the said head with the reduced end of the tubular leg, and a key held in the said key-way and having two heads on opposite sides of the said foot, substantially as shown and described.
