UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
WILLIAM H. MOORE, OF OWEN SOUND,.AND JOHN GARDINER, OFhDUN- DALK, CANADA; SAID MOORE ASSIGNOR TO SAID GARDINER.
FIRE-ExTlNculsHl-:R-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,440, dated December 4, 18 94.
Application ledMaroh 15, 1894. Serial No. OSISLBJ (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. MooEE, gentleman, of Owen Sound, and JOHN GAR- DINER, merchant, of Dundalk, in the county of Grey and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this invention is to devise a re extinguisher in which the essential chemicals will be kept separated from each other at all times, except when it is required to employ the apparatus to extinguish a iire, in order that the chemicals will not eat through or affect the material of which the extinguisher is constructed; and the invention consists essentially of a copper cylinder of a suitable size, having secured within it, four inches from top, an annular plate supporting a lead bottle with `an easily removable top, and providing the top end of the cylinder with a faucet or tap, by means of which the contents can be discharged from the cylinder, and also to provide the top of the cylinder with a removable top, by means of which the cylinder can be filled or relieved of its contents; the whole apparatusbeing constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully set forth.
tion and an upwardly projecting flange C surrounding that opening. The plate B is also provided with a iiange D through which pass rivets E securing the plate to the cylinder A. Passing through the opening in the plate B is a body of a bottle or vessel F, which is supported by an enlargement f, sitting upon the flange O, and also by a downwardly projecting iiange G resting upon the plate B. The bottle or vessel Eis made of lead or other suitable metal, and the opening at the top of the bottle or vessel F is closed by a removable cap H, which sits loosely on the top of the vessel. f
The plate B and the bottle or vessel F when in place form a chamber betweenthe said -plate and the top of the cylinder, and within this chamber is placed carbonate of soda in a powdered form. i
t Within the bottle or vessel E is contained sulphuric acid, and in the lower section of the cylinder A is contained salt brine. The upper end of the cylinder A is fitted with a brass top I, and this top I is fitted with a tap or faucet J. The brass top I is closed by a plate or cover K having a downwardly projecting flange L screw-threaded to correspond with the screw-threads cut in the top I, and this cover K isu also fitted with a nutM to admit of Vthe cover being readily screwed on or off of the top. The lower extremity of the cylinder is provided with a suitable base O,
and the top I is fitted with a handle P, one y arm 1o of which is secured to the top at or near the faucet J, and the other arm p of the handle is secured to the top diametrically op.4 posite the arm p. The object of securing the handle in this manner is to enable the person operating the extinguisher to take the extinguisher on his arm,and with the use of the hand on the other arm move the faucet into any required direction.
In the operation of the device the cylinder is turned upsidedown to allowof the sulphuric acid within the bottle or vessel F being emptied into the chamber and combining with the carbonate of soda to form carbonic acid gas. This gas, ascending to the then top of the cylinder, the cylinder is then reversed and the faucet is opened, permitting the gas toforce the salt brine out of the faucet. By placing the salt brine in the bottom of the cylinder without adding to it the carbonate of soda, the salt brine will have little or no action upon the cylinder itself, thus dispensing with the necessity of lining the cylinder with glass or other acid proof material, and by providing the cylinder with the'4 plate B and a metallic bottle or vessel F fitted with an easilyremovable top, thesulphuric acid and the carbonate of soda can be readily combined to form the requisite gas, and after the cylinder has been discharged it can be recharged with salt brine. The bottle or Vessel F can be recharged with sulphuric acid and replaced, and the chamber formed between the plate B and the top of the cylinder can be relled With carbonate of soda, and the device ready for a second operation.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fire extinguisher the combination of the cylinder A, the plate B secured Within the cylinder having au opening therethrough, a ange surrounding the opening through the cylinder, a bottle or vessel F supported upon the flange C, and `having a flange G resting upon the plate B, a cap for the vessel or bottle F, a top I for the cylinder, a cover K to close the opening through the top, a faucet J fitted to the top, a handle P secured to the top, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Signed at Dundalk this 12th day of January, 1894.
WM. H. MOORE. JOHN GARDINER.
