Description

NlTED STATES EMIL LUNDGREN, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION LOCK-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,436, dated December 4, 1894;.
Application filed August 14, 1894- Serial No.520,323. (N model.)
I detachably securing the pintle of a door, window, or other hinge in engagement with the eyes of the leaves, to prevent accidental displacement and at the same time permit the removal thereof when'necessary to detach the door or window.
Further" objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge embodying my invention.
. Fig.2 is a vertical section of the same through the axis of the pintle-rod. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the pintle-rod, detached. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the eyes and tumblers forming the hinge, detached. Fig. 5 is a similar view,
showing the parts reversed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all thefigures of the drawings.
1 and 2 designate, respectively, the opposite leaves of the hinge, of which the leaves 2 are provided with twin spaced eyes 3 between which the single eyes 4 of the leaves 2 are fitted. Through these registering eyes extends the removable pintle-rod 5, providedat one end with a knob or handle 6, the shoulder 7 at the inner end of which abuts against the adjacent outer side of the contiguous eye. The pintle-rod is provided with spaced studs or projections 8 and the eyes adjacent to the.
knob or handle 6 are provided in their bores with corresponding notches 9 to enable the rod to be inserted with facility, by allowing these studs or projections to pass. The opposite end of the pintle-rod, which is arranged in the other set of registering eyes, is reduced or tapered, and fits in a cap 10 provided with a socket for the reception of the extremity of the pin'tle-rod and having a reduced portion 11 which extends into the adjacent eye of a hinge-leaf. This reduced portion 11 is provided in its outer surface with an annular groove 12 adapted to receive a lug 13 within said adjacent eye of the hinge-leaf, this groove havinga communicating or outlet slot 14: to
facilitate the insertion of the reduced portion of the cap in the eye. After the insertion of the reduced portion the cap is partially rotated, to move the outlet slot out of registrathe intermediate or spacing shells have bores which are sufficiently large to allow the studs or projections to pass freely. The adjacent tumblers and spacing shells are provided at their contiguous ends, respectively, with annular projections or extensions 18 and receiving cavities or sockets 19, to maintain the parts in alignment, and the terminal spacing shells, which are contiguous to the inner eyes of the hinge-leaves are provided at their outer sides with similar projections or extensions 20 to fitin cavities or sockets 21 in the inner sides of said eyes.
With the parts in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or assembled, it is necessary, in order to withdraw the pintle-rod, to turn the several tumblers until their longitudinal grooves 17, (which correspond with the hereinbefore described grooves or notches 9 in the hinge-eyes adjacent to the knob or handle of the pintle-rod,) agree or align with the studs or projections on the pintle-rod. This alignment is facilitated by the marks or indices 23 with which the tumblers are provided, the proper alignment being attained when said marks or indices align with a similar mark or indicator 24 on the hinge-eye adjacent to the knob or handle of the pintle-rod. It will IOC be understood that the assembling of the parts of the hinge is accomplished by the reversal of the above described operation, and that after the insertion of the pintle-rod the tumblers should be turned to move their grooves or notches 7 out of alignment with the studs or projections of the pintle-rod. The cap is preferably shaped, as shown, to correspond with the knob or handle, to secure symmetry of the hinge.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with hinge-leaves having interlocking eyes provided with registering bores, of a pintle-rod engaging said eyes, and a series of tumblers concentric with the pintle-rod, said tumblers and pintle-rod be ing provided with intermeshing projections and notches, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with hinge-leaves having registering eyes, of a pintle-rod engaging said eyes and provided with studs or projections, spaced tumblers concentric with the pintle rod, spacing shells interposed between the tumblers, said tumblers being provided with grooved bores to receive the studs or projections of the pintle-rod, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with hinge-leaves having registering eyes, of a pintle-rod engaging said eyes and provided with studs or projections, a knob or handle attached to one end of the pintle-rod, a series of tumblers rotatably mounted concentric with the pintle-rod and provided with grooves to allow the passage of the studs or projections on the pintlerod, and a cap removably fitted upon a hingeeye adjacent to the end of the pintle-rod opposite to the said knob or handle, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with hinge-leaves having registering eyes, of a pintle-rod provided at one end with a knob or handle and at intervals with studs or projections, a cap attached to a hinge-eye at the opposite end of the pintle rod and having 'a reduced portion fitting in the bore of said eye and provided with a groove which is engaged by a lug in the eye, spaced lugs concentric with the pintlerod and provided with longitudinal slots to receive the studs or projections thereon, and interposed spacing shells having enlarged bores, said tumblers and interposed shells being provided at their contiguous ends, respectively, with engaging extensions and cavities, and the terminal shells being provided with corresponding extensions which engage cavities in the inner sides of contiguous eyes, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EMIL LUNDGREN.
