RIBBON CASE PORTYPE WRITINGMCHINES.'
SEM Fir '5, www1 v UNITED- STATES PATENT GFEIGE.
ROBERT C. HOPKINS,` OE SOMERVIEEEASSIGNOR To THE CARTER, DINS- MORE a COMPANY, OE BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, AND NEW YORK, N. Y.
RleBoN-.CASE FOR TYPE-wRl'rll'aeI MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming parte of Letters patent No. 530,30*?, aateaDeeemberA, 1894.
`.Application and my so, 1892.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.- y
Beit known that I,`RoBERT,-G.HOPI;INS, aV citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middleseintate of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type-Writer-Ribbon Cases, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to a case for holding, transporting and delivering typewriter ribbons of the character used upon the Ham; mond, Crandall and similar typewriting ma chines, and it is adapted to take the place of the ribbon holder or reels of such machines In Such capacity it not only acts as a cover` and protector for the ribbon, but also as a means by which it can be used in the machine.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective, representing the application of my invention to a Hammond typewriting machine. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section through the ribbon case and ribbon.- Fig. 3 is a View representing the cover as re-` moved from the caseor ribbon holding sec-` tion or part. Fig. et is a View in plan of the ribbon holding part. Fig. 5 is a view'in perspective of the turning crank.
The case or holder comprises two sections, namely, the part A, having a h-ub or sleeve on which the ribbon is mounted, and connprising a plate having extending upward from its center a bearing to it theribbon reel spindles or shafts of the Hammond or other machines, a sleeve about said bearingforming a space for receiving andholding a ribbon end, and means at its outer edge for 4receiving and holding the other section of the case or holder, namely, the section A', which i, is of a shape to cover one Side and the outer edge of the ribbon, and to be united at its lower edge to the first named section.
It will be observed that when the section A is removed from the section A the ribbon remains upon the sleeve so that it may be readily unwound from it, beingunrestrained upon its'side.
The section A, preferably, is made of sheet 5o metal, and the bearing a is preferably formed sean No. 441ml. (No mm1.)
` by striking up or spinning the center section of the blank from which this part is made, the bearing sleeve ct preferably being integral with the bottom a', and being of a size to it the ribbon shaft, spindle or support of the machine for which the ribbon is adapted.
The outer edge of the section A is preferably provided With a V or cup-shaped channel a2 below the upper surface of the bottom `o. to receive and hold the lower edge of the 6o covering section. The section `A also hasthe sleeve a3, which is united to the bottom a of section A, and which surrounds the central sleeve a and is of a size Sufficient to form a narrow recess or chamber a4. This sleeve a3 65 has preferably a slit a5, through which one end of` thetypewriter` ribbonis passed, the hooks or devices by which the ribbon is attached toa roll or reel being contained in the recess a4, and acting to hold the innerend of 7o the ribbon to the sleeve. The ribbon is then `wound about this sleeve by turning the section A, which may be supported on a suitable Vshaft or spindle,`the edge of the ribbon of course resting upon the bottom a as it is wound. The section is adapted to be turned by means of a crank B, which fits the upper end of the sleeve as, which'is somewhat drawn in at that point to form a shoulder a6 against which the crank ring b may rest. The crank So ring has also a projection or spur b which extends into the upper end of the slit o5, which is somewhat enlarged preferably to receive it. From the ring there extends the crank arm b2. This when the case is closed for transportation is turned downward, as represented in Fig. 2. In use its position is reversed, or as represented by the .dotted lines in Fig. 3. y
The cover section A has the top c provided' 9o `with a central recesso of a size. to tit upon the upper edge orsection of the sleeve 0,3, and it also has the cylindrical Section c2, which is of a size to cover the wound ribbon, and is of a depth sufcient to cover it and permit its lower edge c3 to extend into the Cup or V-shaped recess a2, and this edge c3 preferably has bayonet recesses o4 either cut or pressed thereinwith which the projections C40 of the Sections A engage. (See Fig. 3.) This roo Y bayonet slot is in elect a screw fastening, but I do not confine myself to this method of securing the two sections ofthe case together.
The case thus formed provides a reel for the ribbon and a cover for it which serves to protect and cover it while it is being transported and exposed for sale, and in use the base section may serve as the reel of the typewriting machine or not, as desired. When so employed it is placed on the holding spindle shaft say of a Hammond machine, (see Fig. 1,) and the section A removed.' The ribbon is then exposed and is held by the sleeve and bottom a', and in a position to render or deliver to the other reel of the machine. There may then be used to rest upon and protect .the ribbon from dust a thin dat plate e. (See Fig l.)
It will be observed that the cup or recess for receiving and holding the flange of the` cover A is below the bottom a and therefore does not interfere with the delivery of the ribbon from the sleeve or with its winding thereon.
When the ribbon holder is used on a Crandall machine it will be necessary, of course, to provide the bottom section with an exterior gear.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesa l. A typewriter ribbon case or holder comprising the section A having an upward ex-l tending sleeve or bearing, and the cover A having the top c, and cylindrical section 02,; the Said section A having a groove or recess near its edge to receive the edge of the said cylindrical section c2 as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination in a typewriter ribbon case or holder, of the section A, the bearing a, the slit sleeve a3 and the downward cover holder section a2 with the cover A', having the top c and flange ci adapted to be united with the flange 0.2 of the section A, as and for the purposes described.
3. A typewriter ribbon holder comprising the section A having the bearing or sleeve d and the ribbon holding sleeve a3, and flange a? below the bottom a with the cover A having the section c to fit the sleeve a3, and the ange c adapted to be united to the flange a2, as and for the purposes described.
4L. The typewriter ribbon holder having the ribbon holding sleeve o r hub provided with a shoulder a6 and a recess or opening, combined with a crank to fit said sleeve and'rest against the shoulder thereof and provided with a spur adapted to engage said recess, substantially as described.
5. The typewriter ribbon holder having the base or bottom a and a ribbon holding hub or sleeve rising therefrom and having a vertical slit, combined with a crank consisting of an annular ring adapted to encircle the hub and having a projection to enter said slit therein, and the handle b2, substantially as described.
