To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, ALFRED WEED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison 'andState of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Stripping File-Blanks, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore in the manufacture of files it has been customary to, what is termed, strip the file blanks. This is done after the blanks have been ground, by taking a fiat file in the hand and drawing it laterally over the face of the blanks so'as to reduce it to the desired level plane and smoothness. This operation is one involving considerable labor and unless the operative is a skilled operative the blank is apt to be more or less rounded and uneven. In order to overcome objections in this process of manufacture, I make use of mechanical appliances for efiecting the result as fully set forth hereinafter and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine for stripping file blanks embodying my improvement. Fig. '2 is' a plan View; Fig. 3, an end view looking at theright hand end, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a section on the line Jr-4, Fig.1. Fig. 5, is an enlarged view of devices upon the bed plate, said'view being in part an elevation'looking from oneend of the machine, and in part a transverse section. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are enlarged details, Fig. 8 being a section on the line 88, Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the blank holders.
The file blank holder is of anysuitable shape and construction. As shown, it is a lever A of a T-shape provided with ears 13 through which extend set screws 14: having conical ends to enter recesses in a supporting plate 15 to which the file blank 90 is suitably clamped. The file y, by means of which the blank is to be stripped is carried by a suitable holder B so supported as to hold the file y upon but at right angles to the blank, and the holder B is connected with devices whereby it can be moved back and forth in a line at right angles to the line of the file. In connection with devices for imparting this movement, I also make use of devices whereby another movement is imparted either to the file blank or to the file, or both, that will carry different portions of thefile overthe blank at different times.
t In the construction shown, the file is so sup ported that it can accommodate itself to the general plane of the blank. Thus the file is seated in a recess in a socket piece 16 having a rounded upper edge Fig. 8, which fits a socket in the under side of a bar 17, hinged at one end and having a handle 18 at the other end, the socket piece having end flanges 19 which prevent the longitudinal movement of the said piece while it can freely rock; and cross bars 20 across the under side of the socket piece serve to retain the file in the socket in thesaid piece. The file therefore canhave a slight rocking movement so that its face will be caused to bear flat against the face of the blank at all times. The blank also is capable of a slight rocking movement inasmuch as it is seated upon the plate 15 having pivotal supports at the ends so that the faces of the file and blank will always be parallel and in contact.
The arm 12 of the blank holder A has a .waved slot to which receives a pin 21 extending upward from the bed X of the machine,
and as shown, the blank holder is pivoted by turned down upon its pivot so as to bring the face of the file in contact with that of the blank, and then through suitable means, the holder while in a position transverse to the blank is caused to move back and forth in a line parallel to the length of the blank,while the latter hasa motion at right angles to the motion of the file in consequence of the reciprocation of the bar 0. As the barO reciprocates the action of the pin 21 in the slot to oscillates the file holder A so that additional movement is imparted and there is a constant change in the position of the blank as the file moves over it from end to end, and as the blank also moves beneath the file. By these varied movements, the file is drawn across the face'of the blank at different angles back and forth and is also passed longitudinally across the face of the blank, or what is the same thing, the latter is carried beneath the file, so that there is a thorough filing action over the entire face and the blank is effectually and uniformly stripped, far more uniformly than can be done by hand.
The proper movements may be imparted to the bar 0 and to the file holder B by various differentappliances, but I prefer to make use of those which I will now describe, and which permits me to operate a large number of stripping devices in a single machine.
Thus a series of file holders are connected together to be operated from a single operating device. In the construction shown, there is a central slide E sliding longitudinally in a guide 52 upon the platform or table X to the edge of which slide is pivoted a series of arms 17 of file holders B, and a weight slides upon a rod 25 supported by cars above each arm 17 so as to vary the pressure upon the file by moving the weight farther outward or inward. In like manner a series of blank holders A are secured to one bar 0 beneath each series of file holders.
Any suitable appliances may be used for longitudinally reciprocating the slide E and laterally reciprocating the bar 0. As shown in Fig. 1, the slide E is provided with an arm 26 which extends downward through a slot in the table and is connected to a pitman 27 also connected to the crank of a crank shaft 28 driven by gears from a driving shaft 29. The end of the slide E is cut off at an angle to form an inclined edge or cam 'i, which as the cam is thrown outward in one direction, is brought against a projection 30 from the arm 31 of a shaft 42 extending longitudinally through the machine; and this arm 31 carries a pawl 32 which engages a ratchet wheel 33 upon said shaft, the ratchet wheel being fixed on the shaft and the arm 31 swinging loosely thereon.
At each end of the shaft 42 is a crank wheel 35,the crank of which is connected by a pitman 3b with an car 37 upon one of the bars 0, and the bars are connected together at their ends by connecting rods 38. As the slide E moves outward, its inclined edge 7 being brought against the projection 30 swings the arm 31 in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, and when the bar E moves back, a spring 39 moves the arm 31 in a reverse direction until it strikes a pin 40. By this means the arm 31 is reciprocated and the pawl thereof is caused to engage the ratchet wheel and turns the shaft 32 with a step by step movement, which gradually changes the lateral positions of the two bars 0, 0.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, I claim as my invention 1. A machine for stripping file blanks provided with a holder fora blank, aholder carrying a file and arranged to permitthe file to be brought flat against the upper face of the blank, means for imparting an oscillating movement to the blank holder and means for reciprocatingthe two holders in opposite directions, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a machine for stripping file blanks, of a series of holders for the file blanks connected with one operating 'device, a series of file holders connected with another operating device, means for operating the said devices so as to move the blanks back and forth in one direction, and the files back and forth in a direction at right angles to that of the holders, and means forimparting a simultaneous oscillating movement of the blanks, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a machine for stripping file blanks, of holders for the files and blanks, and means for reciprocating them in directions at right angles to each other, and means for imparting a rocking or oscillating motion to the blank holders, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combinationin a machine for stripping file blanks, of holders and means for attaching the blanks thereto, arms having waved bearings or slots extending from the holders pins extending into said slots, and a bar to which the series of said holders is pivoted, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a machine for stripping file blanks, the combination with a reciprocating file holder, of a blank holder, means for reciprocating the blank holder, and means for oscillating the same, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a series of blank holders, of a series of file holders connected to a slide E, means for reciprocating the said slide, and means for oscillating said blank holders, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with a series of file holders, of a series of blank holders, a bar 0 to which the blank holders are connected, and means for reciprocating the bar 0 in one direction, and the holders B in a direction at right angles to that of the bar, and means for simultaneously oscillating the blank holders, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination of the reciprocating slide E having an inclined edge, the bars G supporting the blank holders, an arm 31 with a projection arranged to make contact with the end of the slide E, a spring for moving the said arm in one direction, a pawl carried by said arm and engaging a ratchet upon the shaft 32, and crank wheels upon said shaft having their cranks connected with one of the bars 0, substantially as set forth.
