Description

Unitas STATES ATENT FFICE.
GEORGE HARVEY, OF WINNIPEG, CANADA.
RULE AND RULING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,043, dated November 27, 1894.
Application filed July 25, 1894. Serial No. 518,532. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE HARVEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Winnipeg, in the county of Selkirk and Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rules and Ruling Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled -in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked :hereon, which form a part of this specifica- Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of invention showing two handles. Fig. 3 is a cross-section showing blotting paper.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in ruling devices, the object being to provide a simple, strong, and convenient device of this character, capable of being used much more rapidly than an ordinary rule, and especially designed for use in ruling paper, it being. provided with means for carrying the rule above the paper and out of the way of the ink.
With this object in View the invention con-' sists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame of the device, consisting of a light bar of metal, either circular or angular in cross-section, and having its end portions bent at substantially right angles, as indicated at a, a. Secured to said end portions and lying parallel with the body of the frame, is the rule B, which preferably consists of a thin bar of metal of L form in cross section. This form is preferred for the reason that it is stronger, but I do not wish to limit myself thereto, as other forms will suffice. Journaled between the arms a, a, of the frame, and parallel with the rule, is an elongated roller 0, which is of such diameter that it will hold the frame and rule sufficiently above the paper to avoid their coming in contact with the ink. Atthe cen- 5o ter, the frame and rule are preferably connected by an upwardly curved brace-arm D.
E designates a handle attached to the body of the frame at the central portion thereof.
In some devices I may employ two such handles placed near each other, as shown in Fig.
2, so that the device may be held firmly without danger of its slipping.
F designates a gage which is placed at one side of the rule in order that in ruling lines they may be made at equal distances apart. This gage I have shown as consisting of a small piece of metal pivoted to the horizontal flange of the rule near one end thereof, and having a beveled inner end which permits the gage when not in use to be turned back onto the flange and out of the way, and which, when the gage is in use, engages with the vertical flange of.the rule and holds it extended.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the roller 0 as having a wrapping of blotting paper, this feature adding to the value of the device when used for ruling paper.
The rule may be marked with any desired scale.
The roller 0, in addition to its office of bolding the. frame and rule out of contact with the paper, also enables the device to be more rapidly and readily moved from point to point over a surface.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein described improved ruling device, comprising the frame composed of the bar A having its end portions bent at right angles thereto, a rule B secured to said end portions, an elongated roller journaled in said end portions between the bar and rule, 0 and parallel therewith, and a gage device carried by said rule, substantially as specified.
2. The herein described improved ruling device, comprising a bar having its end portions bent at substantially right angles 5 thereto, the rule B secured to said end portions and consisting of a thin bar of metal of L-shape in cross-section, the upwardly curved brace-arm D connecting said bar and rule,
one or more handles attached to the central portion of said bar, and a gage device F, consisting of a small piece of metal pivoted to the horizontal flange of the rule, and having a beveled inner end which permits said gage when not in use to be turned back onto the flange and out of the Way, and. which, when the gage is in use, engages with the vertical flange of the rule, substantially as specified. 10
In testimony WhereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE HARVEY.
