ROPE-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of liietters` Patent No. 529,933, dated November '27, 1 894.
Appiiaeon niet July 25,1 S94.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GREGORY M. MULLEN, of Baltimore'city, in the State of Maryland, have invented a newand useful Improvement 1n Rope Clamps or Couplings, of which the following is aspecicati-on.
My invention is an improvement in rope clamps and consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. j
In the drawings-Figure l is a side view and Fig. 2 alongitudinal section of my clamp. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clamp' section, and Fig. 4 is a detail section on about line 4 4 of Fig. 3. j
The clamp is shown as composed of the clamp section A and the case section B both being constructed as more fully described hereinafter. The clamp section A is formed angular fiange and which has on its outer side connection with a rope, chain, or other section. From the inner side of said head project longitudinally the clamping jaws C the outer edges of which are tapered, and threadedv gradually enlarging toward their juncture withthe head so the case when screwed thereon will tend to press the jaws together and clamp the rope between them. Y
The inner adjacent faces of the clamping jaws are toothed or serrated to bite the rope and these faces -are specially formed to per'- mitthe insertion of the rope laterallybetween the jaws as distinguished from inserting said; rope longitudinally. This is an important feature of my invention and is eected by having the space between said jaws at one or both of its edges as wide or wider than the space between the clamping portions of such jaws so the rope can be placed alongside the space between the jaws and pressed laterally therein. This is preferably effected by tapering or flaring the space between the jaws transversely forming a wedge shaped space into which the rope is pressed. This avoids the inconvenience of passing the rope longitudinally between the jaws and also renders Serial No. 518.516. (No model.)
it practicalto set the jaws normally closer together than when the rope is inserted longitudinally and as a consequence permits an eicient clamping of the rope with a very slight compression of the clamping jaws.
The case is provided with a longitudinal bore b to receive the clamping arms such bore being tapered longitudinally and threaded to fit and compress the jaws of the clamp section when the case is turned upon said clamp section as shown. This case is made of sufiicient length to practicallyincase the clamping jaws and the portion of the rope held therebetween such case being arranged at one end to abut the head a, of the clamp section when the parts are adjusted together and being provided on its other end With a head b', small opening b2 just sufficiently "large for the passage of the rope being provided at such end of the case the latter thus completely incasing the clamping jaws and the portion of rope clamped between them. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, andldesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a Vrope clamp a clamping section provided with jaws, and having the space between said jaws tapered or flared laterally and a compressor substantially as set forth.
2. A rope clamp composed of a clamp section having integral jaws theinner faces of which are formed at angles inclining laterally whereby the space between said jaws is tapered laterally whereby the rope may be pressed laterally between said jaws, and a compressor upon said jaws substantially as set forth. Y
3.r In a rope clamp the combination of the clamping section having the jaws serrated or toothed on their inner sides and threaded on their outer sides and having the space between said jaws tapered or flared laterally and the case threaded on said jaws and made of such length as to inclose said jaws and the tended therefrom threaded externally and with a head and having an opening for the having the space between said jaws tapered passage of the rope substantially as and for or llared laterally and the case section having the purposes set forth.
-a longitudinal threaded bore and turning GREGORY M. MULLEN. 5 upon the clamping jaws one end of said case Witnesses: 1 being arranged to abutthe head of the olamp- SOLON C. KEMON,
ing section and the other end being formed PERRY B. TURPIN.
