EXTERIOR FINISH FOR FRAME STRUCTURES.

Be it known that I, THEOPHILE GIEOUAED, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Catharines, in the county of Lincoln, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new antl useful Improvements in Exterior Finish for Frame Structures, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved exterior iinish for the walls of frame buildings and shingle roofs, and has for its object to provide a plastic exterior finish for frame structures that may be formed in imitation of brick work, tiles, and the like and that may be applied to old structures to repair the same or to new structures built for the purpose, and that when so applied shall form an impervious coating unaffected by thermal changes and shall be held firmly in place and be prevented from cracking and scaling off, and to these ends my invention consists in a plastic coating applied to the exterior of frame buildings constructed as hereinafter described in the manner and by the means substantially as hereinafter speciiied and definitely pointed out in the claims following the description.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speci tication-Figure l, is a perspective view ot' a portion of the wall 'and roof of a frame building showing the plastic coating applied thereto. Figs. 2 and 3, are sectional views respectively of a wall and roof provided with the plastic coating.

In the construction of frame buildings it is commonly the practice to cover the exterior of the Walls with what are generally termed clap-boards, that is to say boards or planks that are nailed in place so as to oveilap each other, as indicated by the reference-numeral 1, to prevent the entrance of rain or moisture between the boards, and roofs are covered in a similar manner with shingles, each shingle overlapping the preceding shingle, as indicated by the numeral 2. To awall or roof thus constructed I fasten by means of staples, hooks, or similar Well known fastening dewire woven in open meshes in a well known manner, the overlapping edges of the clapboards and shingles forming wedge or V- shaped spaces behind the netting or between the netting and the surfaces of the boards or shingles. Over 'said wire netting is applied a coating or layer of plastic material-such as cement, ordinary mortar or plaster, or any suitable material of a similar nature-the plastic material being forced through the meshes of the wire netting and into the spaces formed between the clap-boards or shingles and said netting,completely filling said spaces and the meshes of the netting and inclosing the netting on both sides. The exterior of the plastic coating is finally smoothed off in the same manner as plas-tering. If preferred a paper lining may be applied to the clapboards orshingles before securing thereto the wire netting. Owing to the clap-boards and shingles overlapping each other as shown wedge orV-shaped spaces are formed between the surfaces of the same and the wire netting so that the plastic material in setting will not have a tendency to slip down vertically from behind the netting, the inclined sides of the spaces referred to formed by the boards or shingles tending to force the material into intimate contact with the wire netting which binds or ties it in place.

An excellent imitation of brick and masonry Work, tiling, and the like, may be ytin-ade by mixing with the plastic material a coloring.I pigment of any suitable kind and impressing in the surface ruled lines or designs of any preferred' or appropriate character, and in order to effect economy in the coloring pigment I apply the colored plastic ma terial in a thin coating applied to the surface of the plastic coating proper.

I am aware that partition walls, pavements and the like have been provided with a surface coating of plastic material held in place by a foundation of Wire netting, and I make no claim to such, my invention relating solely to netting applied to the exterior of frame structures formed of overlapping boards or shingles and the plastic material applied to said netting and boards or shingles forming an exterior coating adapted to be Iinished in imitation of brick work, tiling and the like.`
