Description

.trier rence.'
HARVEY L. BYRD, M. D.,
OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARTlFlClAL LEGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,964l, dated March 6, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY L. BYRD, of the city ofAugusta, county of Richmond, State of Georgia, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Mode of Constructing' Artilicia-l Limbs; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full and exact descriptionthereof, reference bei n g -had to the accom panyin g dra-wings, in which- Figure l represents an external'view of an artificial leg constructed after my general plan. Fig. 2 represent a Vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 represents the wire socket detached.
The nature of my invention consists in making the socket ot' the artificial limb and the cylinder which sustains the same of galvanized-wire cloth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my artificial limb A from any of the known materials and in any ofthe known I forms. rIhereto I annex a socket, B, and the cylinder O, which sustains the socket, of galvanized-wire cloth, of iron, steel, copper, Zinc, or other metal or material.
The operation is to combine lightness with durability, and secure health to the stump by affording to it' freevcntilation, obviate friction and its consequences, while the limb may be worn without pain or other inconvenience to the patient which belong,` to sockets and cylinders made of wood, leather, gutta-percha, or other material in use for this purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
The application to artificial limbs of sockets and cylinders made ot' wirecloth, of iron, steel, copper, zinc, or other metal, alloy, or material, or composition.
H. L. BYRD.
