To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED voN COTZHAU- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin,have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Display Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to 'make and use the same.
This invention relates to knock-down display devices. i 1
The object is to produce a display device which shall be capable of occupying cubic space for the purpose of exhibiting objects, such as bottles or other packages, in an erect position, and still be capable of being laid flat for purpose of shipment. 'f
With this object in view, the invention resides in a knock-down display device, consisting of a base, a perforated front or stander, that is, a `standard hinged or flexibly attached thereto at its lower edge, and a back hinged or iiexibly attached to the base or'the stander; furthermore, in a knock-down display device, consisting of a base, a perforated f ront or standen hinged or flexibly attached thereto at its lower edge, anda'back hinged or flexibly attached to the base or the stander, the back being provided with means, in connec tion with the stander, for'connecting or Adisconnecting the two when the back is hinged to the base, or with means for connecting or disconnecting it with the base, when'fit is hinged or exibly attached to the stander;
furthermore', in a knock-down display device,
. a frame or box'in'the rear ofthe stander haviiexibly attached to the lower front edges of the sides; furthermore, in a knock-down display device, consisting of a base, a perforated' front or stander hinged or flexibly attached thereto at its lower edge, a frame or box 'in the rear of the stander havinga back hinged or flexibly attached to the base or the'stander, sides beveled upward at their edges andV hinged or iexibly attached to the back, a connecting-piece hinged or flexibly attached to the lower frontedges of the sides, and a flap extending from and flexibly attached yto the lower edge of the connectingfpiece, forming a bottomto the box when the same is upright in position; furthermore, in a knock-down display device, consisting of a base, a perforatedfront or stander hinged or iiexibly at` vtached thereto at its lower edge, a. frame or box in" the rear of the stander having a back hinged or flexibly attached to the base or the stander, sides beveled upward at their edges and hinged or exibly attached to the back, a connecting-piece hinged or exibly attached tothe lower edges of the sides, and flaps extending from and exibly attached to the lower edge or edges ofone or. bothof the sides, forming a bottom to the box when the same is upright in position; furthermore, in a knock-y down display device, consisting of f a base, aV
perforated front or stander hinged or flexibly attached thereto at its lower edge, a frame or box in the rear of the stander having a back hinged or exibly attached tothe base of the stander, sides beveled upward at their edges and hinged or iexibly attached tothe lower edges ofthe sides, and flaps extending from andfexiblyattached to the lower edges of the 'connecting-piece and the sides, forming a bottom to the box'when the same is upright in position; and finally, the invention resides in a knock-down display. device, consisting ofa base, a perforated front or stander, hinged or flexibly attached thereto 'at its lower edge and` having a lug at its upper rear part, a frame or box in the rear of the 'stander having a back hinged or iiexibly attached to the base and provided vwith a loop or slot at its upper front part, sides beveledk upward atA their edges and hinged or flexibly attached to the back, a connecting-piece hinged or iexibly yattached to the front edges of the sides, andaps extending from the lower edges of the connecting-piece and the sides, the lugon the stander to take into the loop or slot in the back to hold stander and frame together.
In the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, andin which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, although the invention may be embodied in various forms and styles, I exhibit one form of embodiment, in which- Figure 1-'- isa View in front perspective, showing the perforated stander, that is, a stander fenestrated or having an aperture, and provided with a chain; also, showing, a base to which the stander is hinged, there being a bottle, for display, in the aperture, guarded and held by attachment to it of the chain. Fig. 2- is a view in rear perspective, showing the stander fenestrated, provided with a chain and with a lug; the base to which the stander is hinged, and the box or frame, the stander and box being slightly separated so that they are disconnected, and the box or frame being slightly tilted backward, showing its back hinged to the base, and displaying its sides and bottom. Fig. 3 is another view in rear perspective, with a portion of the stander broken away to save space, showing the portion of the stander, and the base, the stander being hinged to the base; showing, also, the box or\frame,this being tilted to its full extent backward; there appearing the back provided with the loop, the sides, exibly connected to the back, the connecting-piece flexibly connected to the sides, and daps extending from the edges of the sides and connecting-piece liexibly connected to these and capable of being turnedy inward to form a bottom to the box and Fig. 4- is a view in top perspective, showing the stander in process of being turned down flat against the base, and the back tilted to its full extent` backward, and the sides turned sidewise on their flexible connections with the back carrying down with them the con meeting-piece flexibly connected with their lower edges.
In the drawings, A represents a stander which may be of any suitable shape, style, or configuration, the stander being provided with a perforation or aperture, a, a lug, a2, and a chain or other suitable fastening, a3. The stander is hinged at its lower edge to a base, B. Hinged upon or iiexibly connected with the base, in a manner to turn toward or away from the stander, is a back-piece, C, and this back-piece is provided with a loop, c. Hinged to or flexibly connected with the sideedges of the back-piece, are sides, c2, in the general form of a right-angled triangle, with the right-angle formed by an edge of the back and the base of a side, while hinged to or flexibly connected with the lower front edgesof the sides is a connectingpiece, c, and, hinged to or flexibly connected with the lower edges of the connecting-piece and the sides,` are flaps, c4, c5, ce. There may be a iiap from the lower edge of the back, xed on the basel A bottle, or other suitable object, D, will `,be entered through the aperture in the stander, as will be understood from the statement of the operation of the device, and, where flaps are employed, resting on one or more of these, holds the frame firmly in upright position.
The operation is;` as follows: The box or frame being flattened upon the base, between this and the flat-lying stander, as shown in Fig. 4, the stander is raised and the sides of the box or frame are turned to assume a rightangle with the backas shown in Fig. 3, where they are nearly up to this position. Thereupon, the flaps,-beginning, say, with the ii'ap,
c4, are turned to a right-angle with the lower edgesof the connecting-piece and sides, respectively, forming a bottom to the box, and the back is then tilted upward toward the stander to and beyond the position shown 1n Fig. 2.` .The lng on the stander is then entered into the loop on the back, and the device is-then ready to receive the article to be displayed. Thereupon, some `approprlate article, say, a bottle containing some favorite beer or perfu mery, isentered throughthe perforation into the box, and is made fast to the stander by means of the chain, so that it cannot readilyl be taken away.
To take the device down, for shipment or storage, the bottle is removed, the stander is raised, pulling the lug out of the loop, the
back is turned down upon the base, the -flaps are extended from the bottom, the sides are turned down flat upon the back and the b ase, respectively, carrying the connecting-piece and liaps with them, andthe stander isthen laid down.
It is to be understood that, instead of hinging or flexibly connecting the back to the base, it may be similarly connected with the stander, leaving the base free'tobe turned fiat against .the stander, and then to be laid flat with it `upon the base. In thiscase, there might be means, such asa lug and loop, for fastening back and base together. It is also to be understood that thesides and connecting-piece may be dispensed with; that, even where these are employed, the flaps may be dispensed with, and that only one or two flaps may be employed.
The device may be inany proper design or style,asthat the perforatedstander may form oneside of a miniaturedog kennel, with the dog on top of the kennel, or be` otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desiretosecure by Letters Patent, is-i l l.
